DAVID PEACE
Mind blowing . . . there is so much to enjoy in this brilliant book.
TIM BURGESS
A container sized treasure trove bursting at the hinges with strangeness and wonder . . . I strongly advise you to buy it.
MAXINE PEAKE
This is not a book about a rock band. This is not even a book about Mark E Smith. This is a book about The Fall group - or more precisely, their world.
Over a prolific forty-year career, the Fall created a world that was influential, idiosyncratic and fiercely original - and defied simple categorisation.
Their frontman and lyricist Mark E. Smith spun opaque tales that resisted conventional understanding; the Falls worldview was an education in its own right. Who wouldnt want to be armed with a working knowledge of M. R. James, shipping-dock procedures, contemporary dance, Manchester City and Can? The group inspired and shaped the lives of those who listened to and tried to make sense of their work.
Bringing together previously unseen artwork, rare ephemera and handwritten material, alongside essays by a slate of fans, EXCAVATE! is a vivid, definitive record - an illumination of the dark corners of the Falls wonderful and frightening world.
[EXCAVATE! is] an insane hardback fanzine of found items from one of Mark E. Smiths carrier bags and essays by a really fascinating variety of people . . . this whole book is the most wonderful, unashamedly intellectual, pretentious, ridiculous, exciting hymn to this incredible group.
ANDY MILLER, BACKLISTED
[The Fall have] already piled up much in the way of memoirs and analyses, as if in an attempt to exhaust and deflate it. Excavate! is testament to the power such an effort sets out to rationalise, domesticate and destroy, placing The Fall in the hidden heart of the last 40 years of contemporary art.
THE WIRE
This wide-ranging anthology of scholarly essays, sleeve artwork, lyric sheets and other ephemera is a satisfying reminder of Smiths scabrous wit, unique visual style and rich literary hinterland.
CLASSIC ROCK
A thoroughly engrossing, insightful and immersive trawl through the wonderfully strange Fall-world

This is not a book about a rock band. This is not even a book about Mark E.
Smith. It is not a book about where he drank, or what he said to people, or
who wrote the chords to X, Y, Z. This is a book about the Fall group or more
precisely, their world.
The Fall were so many things, so many worlds; if you got it (and not
everyone did), they represented everything. It is not, therefore, this books
place to attempt a biography. Of the many former members of the Fall, every
personality deserves to tell their own story, in their own time, but that is not
for this book. If there are axes to grind, none were ground here. The content
is as first-hand as possible. So, here are notes, stickers, posters, artwork, beer
mats all material sourced from fans, an unfiltered cache of Fall artefacts.
These are the items that people hung on to and treasured, from the
NME
journalist who gave the group their first feature to the secretary of the Arthur
Machen Society.
The book includes just a couple of interviews, one of which is a look over
the shoulder from the end of the 1990s, in which Mark E. Smiths voice chimes
with absolute clarity. We have included artwork from the thirty-two purely
studio albums (including
Slates
but excluding, say, the mostly live
Totales
Turns
). While reviews and the voices of rock criticism are mostly absent, the
press releases you will read here come straight from the group, written by
Smith alone, or with manager/confidante Kay Carroll. They are here as missives
direct from the Fall Foundation.
This is the world of the Fall. This is the Fall-shaped hole they punched
in the wall. This is
everything else
; each essay touches on an aspect of the
Falls world and influence. In the range of contributors, each with their own
different specialisms and fields of experience, we wanted to illustrate how the
Fall are a jumping-off point into myriad directions, many of them nothing to
do with music. The world of the Fall is not just one of inky fingers thumbing
through music weeklies, or of Peel Sessions, but of a dazzling city founded on
speculative fiction, work ethics and northern architecture.
The book is
for
Mark E. Smith more than it is
about
him.

Preface
I still remember the first time... that wonder and joy of the
Bingo Master
s
tale, and the succinct manifesto of its B-side. In my experience this state of
amazement is a hard one to sustain artists drift off, bands never recapture
that original magic. However, with Mark, and almost always with the brilliant
musicians involved, that rarely happened for forty years. Just re-reading
that last sentence I have to sit here, with tears in my eyes, and take that in:
forty years of brilliance; of mad gigs; of laughter long into the night; strange
studio dances; of perception changed forever; of the mundane lifted onto
a pedestal... which moments later is kicked away.
That remarkable journey from 1978 to
Re-Mit
and the astonishing gig
at the Transformer Festival, Manchester (28.05.17), where Mark told me
how ill he was, and then we went out to stand shoulder to shoulder with
Royal Trux and Swans... a moment of extraordinary defiance. After the last gig
I ever did with Mark at the 100 Club we started discussing the next album.
It was meant to start in December, but other commitments made it impossible
for me until January...
The Fall are so important to those that get it, but they were more
important by far for Mark. We will not see his like again.
