No w try... suggestions help you build on new knowledge. Everything y ou need for an activity is listed at the s tart. 70 You w ill need Ntan design Artists often use black and white for d ramat ic effect. Ntan is an old Japanese design idea, about the balance o f light and dark. Use this technique to make your own N tan artwo rk. Place the black square on to the white paper and draw ar ound it. This will help you retur n the black square t o the same place lat er. Continue c utting shapes fro m the black square and flipping them onto t he white paper. Once your e happ y with the placement o f the shapes, y ou can glue them down. Draw simple s hapes from the edge of the black paper and cut them out. Flip the shapes away from the cut out and onto the white paper surroundi ng it. Positive and negative space Positive and negative space are used to draw attention to differ ent aspects of an artwork. The positive space is the subject that you want to be the focus of the picture, and the rest of the space is negative. Look at the two pictur es below . What pops out to you? Which colors do you think are the positive and negative spaces? Y in and Y ang This ancient Chinese symbol repre sents two opposites that need to be balanced to create calm. The black and white opposing sections come together to form a whole circle. Now try ... Make a piece of N tan ar twork using co lored paper . Whi ch eff ect do you lik e b est? Colored paper White paper Black paper Safety scissors Ruler Pencil Glue stick Use a ruler to dr aw an 8 x 8 in (21 x 21 cm) square on white paper and cut it out. Then use black paper t o dr aw and cut out a 4 x 4 in (10 x 10 cm) square. Be care ful not t o cut too far int o the middle of the black square. !
