Theres always been somethingof a rivalry between the two cities. Nashville may be claim to be Music Capitalof the World, but Memphis is almost universally recognized as thehome of the Blues. And Elvis? Where did the King choose tolive? Memphis has Graceland, Elvis Presleys big mansion that drawstens of thousands of visitors a year.
Like many another city Ive covered, Memphishas rediscovered its Downtown area after leaving it to rot fordecades. New businesses are thriving, artists are creating excitingstorefronts and galleries, the retail scene is getting moreinteresting, new bars are popping up. Memphis also is developing as a center forinnovative cuisine, not as advanced as Nashville is (yet), butthings are happening. One thing you can do in Memphis just aboutcheaper than you can anywhere else is eat some of the best BBQ tobe found in America. There are countless places serving up Memphisstyle BBQ. (Actually, I did count once, and thereare about 75 BBQ places in the area.) There are dozens ofplaces where its hard to spend more than $10 for a meal consistingof a pulled pork sandwich, a side of fries and a soft drink or icedtea.
I havent seen this miracle anywhere else. I mean, I can showyou how to eat cheap even in New York, but unless youre in Queens, where there are hundreds of fine ethnic eateries, you have to seekout the best places. As I wrote after visiting Paynes OriginalBar-B-Que in the listings below, when you say BBQ in Memphis, youmean pork shoulder, not ribs so much. Every little joint has itsown secret method of handling the fire and wood. The pork is always slow-roasted and thenpulled by hand from the bone or chopped with the kind of cleaversyou see in horror movies. The resultant pile of savory meat isplaced on any of dozens of types of hamburger style buns and thentopped with a dollop of coleslaw.
Sauce is either added or itsnot, depending on the place youre visiting. I have often spent myentire trip in Memphis eating nothing but BBQ. And not regretted it one minute. My last word of advice: you wonteither. * * * PRICELINE and HOTWIRE www.priceline.com www.hotwire.com With Priceline, you bid on rooms in the partof the city where you want to stay, select whatever star levels youwant, and generally can get cheaper rooms. These are usually inhotel chains, so nothing with too much character.
With Hotwire, they tell you the price of the room. You dont bid on it. You canoften play one site off against the other to get an even cheaperdeal. (You dont find out the name of the lodging until you closethe deal.)
