Dear Reader,
Any big project is best broken down into steps. Whether youre buying a house, or assembling furniture, it is important to make a plan and stick to it. These projects can be complex: building that new combination desk/bookshelf or renovating that fixer-upper in a new city. It can be easy to overlook important steps if youre not familiar with the process.
Having a guide makes these complex processes much easier. A video tutorial from the furniture manufacturer. The expert opinion of a home construction expert. Theres nothing more valuable than expert advice that breaks down a projects steps, common pitfalls, and snagging points.
Take your prospective SAP S/4HANA migration project. Weve assembled a team of experts with decades of SAP experience: Frank Densborn, Frank Finkbohner, Jochen Freudenberg, Martina Hft, Kim Math, and Boris Rubarth. Their knowledge and guidance is collected here, in a complete resource for SAP S/4HANA migration.

Preface
Digitalization has arrived at enterprises. With increasing frequency, technological innovations are launched that exert drastic influence over our daily lives. The internet, with its heightened interoperability of persons, products, and services, substantially impacts your enterprise and business processes. To consider this interoperability, you must reassess traditional business models and business processes and adapt them if required. Exponential data growth requires innovative approaches to data storage and processing. In terms of system landscapes, the requirements for outsourcing business processes to the cloud keep changing. Access through mobile devices is the user interface that our customers know from their everyday lives and thus use more and more often. As the market leader for business software, we consider it our responsibility to help our customers, whatever the status of their existing system landscapes may be, and support them in addressing the challenges of this digital transformation.
With SAP S/4HANA, SAP provides a modern ERP suite that uses the in-memory technology of SAP HANA to overcome the technical limits of traditional databases. SAP S/4HANA can become the digital core of central, mission-critical business processes such as accounting, logistics, procurement, and sales and distribution along the entire supply chain. The design of SAP S/4HANA is based on the following core aspects: simplification of the applicationin particular, simplification of data structures; simplification of the user experience through role-based user interfaces in SAP Fiori; embedded analytics; machine learning; and a cloud-first approach for developing new functions and business processes.
Customers can freely select the appropriate operation option for their business processes: running the business processes on premise, operating entirely in the cloud, or outsourcing only selected parts of the business processes to the cloud. SAP S/4HANA ensures flexibility. Since the introduction of SAP S/4HANA in 2015, approximately 16,000 customers have chosen this product (as of Q4/2020). The central question for our customers is no longer if they migrate to SAP S/4HANA but how to perform the migration to gain the maximum benefit from it.
This book describes the different operating models and scenarios for migration to SAP S/4HANA in detail. Readers get the opportunity to assess the corresponding scenarios and thus plan their migration to SAP S/4HANA more efficiently. In the context of the various SAP S/4HANA migration scenarios, well illustrate different options for defining your own pace for the migration and thus protecting the investments made into your existing system landscape.
