PREFACE
Welcome to
Algebra Essentials! This book is designed for instructors to introduce algebra to students in approachable and meaningful ways.
Algebra Essentials is intended to increase your knowledge and skills needed to succeed in collegiate mathematics courses. The eight chapters in this book present many examples and exerciseswith complete solutionsthat can be used to practice algebraic concepts. You will receive the most benefit from this book if you use all of the components included. For self-correcting exercises, figures from the text (including 4-color), theorem proofs, and additional information, check out the companion disc.
Additional instructor supplements for use as a textbook are available from the publisher. Exercises This self-study text contains hundreds of exercises to supplement the numerous examples and aid in the drill and mastery of the concepts: 1)Supplementary Exercises (End of each section) These are found at the end of each section of every chapter (e.g., after , etc.) Answers to ALL of these exercises may be found in at the end of the book. 2)Review Exercises (End of the book) Over 100 of these exercises (included to reinforce or review concepts) may be found in . Answers to the odd-numbered Review Exercises may be found in Appendix C.3)Self-correcting Mini-Quizzes The companion disc in the back of the book includes seven, multiple-choice, self-correcting mini-quizzes on arithmetic, equations, factoring, inequalities, like-terms, exponents, and word problems. Companion files on the disc are also available by writing to the publisher at
ACKNOWLEDGMENTS
Many people have contributed to this work in very significant ways. First, we would like to thank Margaret Hitczenko, John Majewicz, and Jos Mason for their numerous suggestions and ideas. We also would like to thank Iraj Kalantari, Lasse Skov, and Don Stalk for their editorial suggestions.
It is with great humility and gratitude that Olgha Davis thanks Tuere Bowles, Christine Grants, David Keim, and Roberta Mahatha, who were instrumental in providing support and insightful guidance throughout this project. And last, but far from least, Olgha Davis could not have completed this book without her two beautiful daughters, Dalya and Andreya Davis. David A. Santos
