Chapter One: Muay Thai Overview

Muay Thai is a way of life. It has been practiced for hundreds of years and has become both a tradition and a culture, especially in Thailand. In some South and Southeast Asian countries, boys, as young as seven years old, are being taught by their fathers this martial art. It is not only meant to teach them the combat sport, but as a tradition that should be passed on by a father to his son.

Origin of Muay Thai
Muay Thai as a Weapon

The use of 8 limbs as close-combat weapons gained popularity during the mid-16 th century. The Thai king, King Narusen, gained his freedom by defeating the Burmese warriors using his hands, feet, elbows and knees in battle. Since then, Thai soldiers had developed the art of using their 8 limbs as a military weapon.

However, the birth of Muay Thai as we know it today, allegedly happened in the mid-18 th century. During that time, the Burmese King wanted to celebrate his victory over Thailand by making the Thais, who became his slaves, to fight against his warriors.

One of the slaves was Nai Khanom Tom, who was a Muay Thai fighter. Before he fought with the Burmese warrior, he asked that he be allowed to honor his father/teacher with a dance. He won every battle he fought. The Burmese claimed that the dance was not to honor his father, but to the curse the Burmese warriors.

After he became the champion, Nai Khanom Tom was granted freedom. He came back to Thailand and put up the first school for Muay Thai. He incorporated the dance in his lessons. The dance later became the Wai Kroo, the traditional dance done by Muay Thai fighters before the start of their fight. Nai Khanom Tom was also named the father of Muay Thai.

Muay Thai as a Sport

Still in the mid-18 th century, after establishing his school, Nai Khanom Tom also started hosting Muay Thai tournaments. These tournaments increased the popularity of Muay Thai as a sport.

The Thai Royalty also supported the beginning of Muay Thai as a sport. Festivals were held to feature the sport. It allowed other Muay Thai fighters from all of Thailand to participate.

Thus, it became not only a sport, but also a part of the traditions and culture of Thailand.

The Spread of Muay Thai around the World

It is said that the world did not know about Muay Thai until World War II, when Thailand participated in the war. American and European soldiers took notice of the combat skills of Thai soldiers. They asked the Thai soldiers to teach them the basics of Muay Thai. The Thai soldiers also taught them the traditions, superstitions and principles of the martial art.

The Americans and the Europeans allegedly made alterations to the rules of Muay Thai. It was to make the martial art easier to learn for their soldiers and for foreign fighters. This became the birth of th modern Muay Thai sport.

Muay Thai versus Other Martial Arts

Muay Thai uses the whole body as a weapon. It is basically the only martial art that uses 8-limbs. The eight limbs are the pairs of hands, feet, elbows and knees. The hands are said to be the sword. The feet are the spear. The elbows and knees are mainly for the shield, but sometimes are also used as the dagger.

Muay Thai versus Kick Boxing

Muay Thai is known as Thai Kick Boxing, however, it is different from kick boxing because the latter only uses 2 limbs, which are the feet. The kick boxer can only use his hands, knees and elbows to defend his body, but not to attack.

As for the rules of the sport, a Muay Thai fighter can hit his opponent anywhere, except on the groin. Clinches are considered to be a strategy. In kick boxing, the kick boxer can only hit the upper body parts of his opponent. He is not allowed to clinch or embrace his opponent in order to hit him.

Muay Thai versus Taekwondo and Boxing

Taekwondo and Boxing only use two limbs. Taekwondo only uses the feet and boxing only uses the hand. Like kick boxing, the opponent can only hit the upper body parts of his opponents and clinches are prohibited.

Muay Thai Versus Karate

Karate is said to have the closest similarity to Muay Thai. Karate uses four limbs to attack, which are the hands and the feet. However, it also uses the shin and the arms as shields. The karate fighter is allowed to hit some lower body parts. However, holding and embracing are not allowed during the fight.

Muay Thai versus Jiu Jitsu, Wrestling and Grappling

Jiu Jitsu, wresting and grappling are martial arts that involve holding and throwing only. The limbs are not used to strike. The purpose of these sports and/or martial arts is to grab the opponent and to hold them down until they surrender.

In Muay Thai, the fighter can grab and hold his opponent in order to strike him. He is not allowed to throw his opponent out of the ring or away from him.

Chapter Two: Understanding Muay Thai
Why Choose to Learn Muay Thai?

There are many famous martial arts around the world. All of them claim to be good self-defense weapons. Some of them are easier to learn than Muay Thai and may not be as strenuous. Why, then, should you choose to learn Muay Thai?

Here are some of the reasons you may consider.

  1. It is a better form of self-defense than other martial art.

As said in the previous chapter, Muay Thai uses the whole body as a weapon. It uses the eight limbs to strike and uses the other parts of the body as a shield. It allows you to grab and hold your opponent while striking. You have better chances of knocking down your opponent in order to defend yourself.

It helps you achieve a greater and more proportional physique.
