ACKNOWLEDGMENTS
Raised Bed Revolution has been the most fun, fulfilling project Ive ever worked on, but its also been the most challenging of my career. None of what you see throughout these pages would have been possible without the help of several generous peoplesome whom Ive met in person and others whom Ive only met via close-knit gardening pockets of the Internet and social media (how cool is that?). Heres my list of fabulous people who deserve great big thank-yous:
To my editor, Mark Johanson, for entrusting me with this gift, for your patience in dealing with a newbie book author, and for making this huge project come together. To my art director, Cindy Laun, for taking my words, photos, and sidebar ideas and magically transforming them into this beautiful book.
Writing and creating the projects for Raised Bed Revolution was quite literally a family affair. To my husband, Rich Auger, for supporting all my crafty, creative dreams, for building me my first raised beds, and for all your help in the garden and around the house with whatever needed to be done during the whole process. A massive thank-you to my parents, Bill and Wendy, and to my sister and brother-in-law, Hilary and Deon, who helped me in my own garden and provided yard space for some of the beds, and planted and tended them so they looked lush and camera-ready. Deon also helped me figure out how to build a cold frame. And a special thank-you to my niece Isla (who was three years old throughout the project) for providing updates and taste-testing what was planted in her parents raised beds, especially cilantro and the one that tastes like licorice.
To Niki Jabbour, for all your photos and ideas, and for coaching me through this whole book-writing process. You are truly a selfless, generous, amazing mentor. And to my other two Savvy Gardening sidekicks, Amy Andrychowicz and Jessica Walliser, for your photos, ideas, and support. Im so incredibly lucky to have all three of you in my life!
To my builder, Scott McKinnon, whom I met serendipitously through mountain biking, another passion of mine. Scott is the super-talented carpenter who designed and built many of the projects you see in this book.
To Donna Griffith (and the fabulous assistants who accompanied you to all the photo shootsLeila Ashtari, Stuart Blaine, and Lisa Daly). Ive admired your work in magazines for years, and Im so honored that your gorgeous photography and style is featured throughout my book.
To Len Churchill, whom I met when I wore my editors hat at Canadian Home Workshop magazine, for your beautiful technical illustrations.
To Jenny Rhodenizer and Paul Zammit at the Toronto Botanical Garden, for all your continued support and for allowing me to showcase one of my raised beds in your gorgeous gardens.
To all those in my garden-writing realm who sat down for coffee, facilitated introductions, or shared your photos and projects: Tracey Ayton, Karen Bertelsen, Steven Biggs, Beth Billstrom, Jamie Bussin, Jennifer Connell, Kristin Crouch, Hilary Dahl and Colin McCrate, Johanne Daoust, Donna Dawson, Marie Eisenmann, Lorraine Flanigan, Brenda Franklin, Trish Fry, Shawn Gallaugher, Jamie Gilgen, Marc Green and Arlene Hazzan Green, Bren Haas, Michael Holmes, Andrea Hungerford, Sean James, Verna Kakowchyk, Signe Langford, Meighan Makarchuk, Narmin Moloo, Dee Nash, Brandon Park, Susan Poizner, Alex Rochon-Terry, Candy Venni, Rick Weingarden, Melissa J. Will, and Ian Wilson. Also thanks to Fairmont Hotels & Resorts, Proven Winners, the University of Maryland Extension, and Woolly Pocket.
To the amazing companies that provided me with materials, plants, and plans for the book: Bonnie Plants, Conquest Steel, Freedom Growing, Gardeners Supply Company, and Loblaw Companies.
And to my MacBook, for not dying on me and losing my work, even though it seemed like you wanted to quit. Often. I may now allow you to retire in dignity.
