Bipolar Child Survival Guide for Children: summary, description and annotation

We offer to read an annotation, description, summary or preface (depends on what the author of the book "Bipolar Child Survival Guide for Children" wrote himself). If you haven't found the necessary information about the book — write in the comments, we will try to find it.

For many years people have held the belief that the Bipolar Disorder only affects adults, but recent findings suggest that having a bipolar child is not only possible, it is actually more and more common these days. While adults generally treat the disorder with the help of medication, therapy and pharmaceuticals, the same approach cannot really be taken with children, especially younger ones, and thats precisely why the Bipolar Survival Guide for Children by Heather Rose was written. In a majority of cases it is believe that Bipolar Disorder is passed on genetically, sometimes over the course of generations. The book will first teach you all you need to know about the signs of a bipolar child, allowing you to make sure that your child indeed has Bipolar Disorder and is not just going through the normal stage of childhood where he or she is prone to temper tantrums. While many do not know this, determining whether or not your child has the disorder as early as possible is...

Introduction

BipolarDisorder, which is sometimes referred to, as manic depression is a disorderthat affects the brain and is marked by the person suffering from extreme mood, swings. Also people who suffer from this mental health disorder will find thattheir activity levels rise and fall and their behavior tends to be quiteerratic.

Whenit comes to children suffering from bipolar disorder most of them will go frombeing nearly manic (feeling euphoric) to feeling very depressed or evensometimes suicidal.

Childrendo tend to find coping with this disorder very hard, as they cannot fullyunderstand why it is that they are feeling the way they do. In somesituations where a child hasnt been diagnosed with suffering from bipolardisorder they may find themselves being classed at school as being atroublemaker or a child who prefers to not interact with others or with schoolactivities.

Certainlywhen it comes to treating a child who has been diagnosed with suffering frombipolar disorder it is important that those around them understand as much aspossible about what they are going through. Even though this is a very seriousmedical condition for which there is no cure when treated correctly through thechild taking the right kind of medication they can control it far better.

Whatmany parents do not realize is that the symptoms associated with thisparticular mental health disorder can start to appear in infants and they aredifferent from those that adults with this disorder will start to display.Unlike adults when children suffer from this disorder they tend to suffer fromcontinuous mood swings that will go between them feeling manic and depressed. As a result of this sudden mood changes a child suffering from this disorder willbecome chronically irritable. However there will also be times when a childwill seem normal and wont display any of the symptoms or mood swings that wecome to associate with bipolar disorder. Then of course when you thinkeverything is returning to normal the symptoms can then appear suddenly withoutany prior warning.

Upuntil very recently few children were diagnosed with suffering from bipolardisorder. Yet according to the American Academy of Child and AdolescentPsychiatry it is believed that up to 1/3 of all the 3.4 million children andteenagers in the USA who are showing signs of depression may in fact beexperiencing what is commonly referred to as early onset bipolar disorder.

Eventhough doctors are now recognizing and treating this disorder in children it isstill not being recognized as a legitimate illness. Until this is changed ofcourse the chances of a child being provided with the right course of treatmentto help them cope with the condition is greatly reduced.

Chapter 1: About Bipolar Disorder

Foranyone with bipolar disorder leading any kind of semblance of a normal life canprove challenging. The condition causes their moods to fluctuate quite a greatdeal. From one day to the next they can suffer from periods of being very happyto being very depressed and irritable. Also the fluctuations between thesemoods can happen without any warning and very quickly.

Althoughmost people believe that Bipolar Disorder is something that only adults areaffected by, there are many children who are affected by this disorder as well.Although the exact reasons why a child may suffer from this particular mentalhealth problem are not know it is believed that if they have a relative whosuffers from this condition the chances that they will do as well is muchhigher.

Justas in adults there are 3 different types of Bipolar Disorder that a child couldbe suffering from.

Type1 Bipolar Disorder I

Aperson who suffers from this particular form will have experienced at least 1full manic episode along with very severe periods of depression. Previouslythis particular form of this disorder was referred to as manic depression.

Type2 Bipolar Disorder II

Whensomeone is diagnosed with suffering from this form of Bipolar Disorder theywill never have experienced a full manic episode. Instead what these peopleexperience periods when their levels of energy and impulsiveness are muchhigher than would be considered normal. But these experiences wont be as highas those that are known as Hypomania. Also between such episodes such peopletend to suffer from periods of depression.

Type3 Cyclothymia

Thefluctuations in a persons moods are far less intense when a person suffersfrom this particular form of Bipolar Disorder. Again as with Bipolar DisorderII their moods will alternate between periods of hypomania (being veryenergetic) and periods of depression.

Onething you need to be aware of when it comes to the last two forms of bipolardisorder if the right questions are not asked then a person can be diagnosedwith suffering from depression rather than these.

Generallymost people who suffer from bipolar disorder cannot provide any clear reasonswhy they suffer from manic or depressive episodes. However there are certainfactors, which can often contribute to these episodes being triggered includingthe following:

Changesthat occurred in their life as a baby

Theycould be caused by medication that they are required to take such asantidepressants or steroids

Theyhave periods where getting sleep is difficult, in fact they suffer frominsomnia

They maybe taking psychoactive drugs

Whena child develops this particular form of illness it is often referred to asearly-onset bipolar disorder. In some cases this can prove to be more severethan the illness that teenagers and adults develop. Plus diagnosing a childwith this disorder can be difficult as they often suffer from the symptoms alot more often plus their mood fluctuations occur more frequently.

Alsowhen seeking a diagnosis for this particular mental health problem parents needto be aware that their child may well be suffering from other medical problems. The kinds of medical problems that can often occur when a child suffers fromBipolar Disorder include the follow:

A childwho suffers from this problem is at risk of suffering from substance abuse.

There isa possibility that the child may also suffer from ADHD (Attention DeficitHyperactivity Disorder)

Thechild could be suffering from certain anxiety disorders especially separationanxiety

They mayin fact be suffering from other forms of mental illness where the symptoms arevery similar to those that people will suffer from
