To whom it may concern
I bring this book to you as a compilation of 106 examples of the Indianism of English.
Many teachers and trainers have studied this topic. I have compiled the examples using public resources for research. The resources are listed in the resource section of the book.
I have not created these examples; I have observed, researched and compiled them for the readers to create a comprehensive resource book.
Thanks,
Sarah
The Reason
I have been training students to speak fluent English for ten years now. My students come from a variety of backgrounds: engineers, doctors, nurses, software engineers, and people aspiring to work and live in countries like Australia, the USA and the UK. Many of my students are teachers, school founders, social workers, police officers, beauticians, travel agents, actors, models and people working in the corporate sector, especially in multinational companies.
With that in mind, all these people are professionals. They studied English at school and even at university. So, why do they have to pay for private training and research this subject all over again?
Why is it that companies are putting so much money into training?
Why do we have to train professionals who have graduated from good colleges and institutions? Sadly, the reason is that we are not taught the correct way to speak English in most of our schools.
However, I am not belittling the efforts our junior school teachers put in to teach us. The issue is that even our teachers are speaking in and are teaching us Indian English because that is what they were taught.
Well, I think that the English spoken here or anywhere globally is impacted a great deal by the first language, culture, diversity, traditions, religious beliefs, races and hierarchy. India has a rich, cultural heritage that dates back at least 5000 years, and it influences the way we speak.
I aim to highlight some characteristic features of English that so many of us are using incorrectly. This is important because we use English almost as our first language and believe that we have mastered it when we havent.
Why do I need English in the first place?
English has become the language of money.
Can you imagine any business that is global and yet does not require English? Probably not. English is the language that has been connecting the world at the level of economic communication. I am not saying that other languages are less important. However, the fact of the matter is that English has become the language of science, aviation, computers, diplomacy, and tourism. Knowing English increases your chances of understanding and being understood around the world. The ability to communicate effectively across cultures is essential these days because of the contributing forces of two factors in the working environment- globalisation and cultural diversity.
Globalisation is the process of consolidation and correspondence among people, companies, and governments across the globe. It has been expedited since the 19th century due to the growth of transportation and communication. This upsurge in global interactions has caused an increase in international trade and the exchange of ideas and culture. Globalisation is primarily a process of communication and integration that relates to social and cultural aspects.
However, it would not have been possible without English.
English is the Global Language!
A language is known as worldwide, global or universal when it accomplishes the approved position and instruction inclination in each country. The result incorporates the authority of the military, politics and finance. A military force, political force and economic forces are the three vital elements of a worldwide or global language.
English is the most extensively spoken and used language in the world. It is the worlds most important language. There are approximately 70 nations that have English as their official language of communication and education.
About 40 per cent of the worlds total Gross National Product (GNP) comes from English-speaking nations. English is the one language that almost every educated person can use around the world.
It is the language used in media, films, music, and TV. It has been spoken for one thousand years. Books written in Old English and Middle English are extremely important to understand the evolution of the language.
Though the spellings in these writings are unclear and irregular to present-day English speakers, yet when read phonetically, the English speaker can pronounce the words easily.
English is the most widely used language around the world.
Some individuals may not agree that English is the essential language in the world. However, it is the most used language in the world. It is spoken by a variety of people numbering 800,000,000 by a traditionalist measure and 1,500,000,000 by a liberal estimate. It is the core language of communication in more than 60 nations. One hundred and fifty million individuals speak English smoothly as a foreign language. Furthermore, English is the language of worldwide traffic, and, again, the essential language of books, science and innovation. English is likewise significant in business. Eighty-four percent of organisations use English as a foreign language. In some countries, the knowledge and mastery of this language leads to higher salaries.
The Significance of Learning English
English may not be spoken in every country in the world, yet it is a significant language in a tremendous number of countries.
Another reason for learning English is that a great deal of the world's famous movies, songs and books are in English.
Likewise, a large portion of the matter created on the world wide web is in English. Thus, being able to comprehend English will permit access to information that cannot be easily accessed by those who do not know this language.
Since English has become the language of business dealings all over the world and connects individuals and nations across borders, it is wise to learn to speak English in a way that is understood by everyone, regardless of social and political differences.
Most of us are taught the syntax, sentence construction and language rules at school. Despite this, we still end up using many phrases and sentences that are not understood by English-speaking people anywhere else in the world.
This way of speaking that is specific to Indian English is called Indianism. It also refers to the sentences and phrases that are literally translated from an Indian language to English.
So, what will you gain from reading all of this? What can you expect to learn by the end of this compilation?
Well, I bring you 106 examples of phrases, statements and words that originated and are used in India! In case you are wondering why 106; why not any other number? The reason is simple, my friend, I like that number! You can expect to understand the logic behind each Indianism that I examine and learn better alternatives.
