Not every person is an accountant, engineer, rocket scientist, or math teacher.
However, every person does use math. Most people never think, I just used math to decide if I have enough milk for this week! But that is exactly what they did. Math is everywhere; we just dont see it because it doesnt always look like the math we do at school. Math gives you the power to:
- determine the best route on a trip
- keep score in a game
- choose the better buy
- figure a sale price
- plan a vacation schedule
People use fractions every day to measure all sorts of things. You use fractions of a cup or teaspoon, fractions of an inch, and fractions of a pound. Decimals are used all over the world in sports and science.
They are also used to represent money values. This book will help you understand decimals and fractions. It can be read from beginning to end, or used to review a specific topic.
What numbers can you use to describe part of a group? What numbers can you use to describe part of one thing?
Fractions use two numbers to describe part of a whole thing, or part of a group.
numeratorThe top number in a fraction. 1 part of the star is colored.
denominatorThe bottom number in a fraction.
denominatorThe bottom number in a fraction.
It tells the total number of equal parts. The star has 2 equal parts. 1/2 is colored.proper fractionA fraction whose numerator is less than its denominator.
improper fractionA fraction whose numerator is equal to or greater than its denominator.
Two men are standing at a bus stop. Only one has an umbrella.
Use a fraction to describe how many of the men have umbrellas.
Step 1: How many men are in the whole group? 2. The number 2 is the bottom number, or denominator.
Step 2: How many men have umbrellas? 1. The number 1 is the top number, or numerator.
1/2 of the men have umbrellas. Use a fraction to tell how much of the rectangle is colored.
Step 1: How many equal parts are in the rectangle? 8.
The denominator is 8.
Step 2: How many of the equal parts are colored? 5. The numerator is 5.
5/8 of the rectangle is colored. The fraction bar is the line that separates the numerator and denominator.
Can you write a fraction with a value of one or more? Yes! You can use an improper fraction or a mixed fraction.
mixed fractionA number that is made of two parts: a whole number and a proper fraction.
Write a mixed fraction and an improper fraction to show how many circles are colored.
Step 1: How many full circles are colored? 1.
Write a mixed fraction and an improper fraction to show how many circles are colored.
Step 1: How many full circles are colored? 1.
This is the whole number part.
Step 2: How many equal parts are in the partially colored circle? 4. This is the denominator of the fraction part.
Step 3: How many equal parts of the partially colored circle are colored? 1. This is the numerator of the fraction part.
Step 4: The denominator of an improper fraction is how many equal parts are in one whole.
How many equal parts are in one whole circle? 4. This is the denominator.
Step 5: How many equal parts are colored in all of the circles (whole and partially colored)? 5. This is the numerator.
Write 7/4 as a mixed fraction.Step 1: Divide the numerator by the denominator.
Step 2: Write the mixed fraction.
The remainder is the numerator of the fraction part. The denominator stays the same.
