    Intro to Triathlon

    Triathlon is one of the hottest trends in the sports scene today. It is the new black. Adrenaline junkies and even the couch potatoes are trying to get a shot at doing a triathlon. Instead of the usual weekend 5K race, event organizers place their markers from the open water to the roads where the toughest terrain and picturesque views are found. These multi-sport events cover as far as eight miles to a jaw-dropping 140 miles.

    A bit of history

    A triathlon comprises of three sports disciplines: swimming, cycling, and running. This three-part sport is a continuous event without any rest. It is usually completed individually, but it can also be a team event.

    The very first triathlon event took place on September 25, 1974. The sport was pioneered by Jack Johnstone, and Don Shanahan. It comprised of a 10-kilometer run, 8-kilometer bike, and a 500-meter swim. The sport received Olympic status in 1989 and was first introduced at the 2000 Sydney Olympics in Australia. No other sport received such status in a short amount of time.

    Triathlon has since grown in popularity. The sport grew rapidly and gained worldwide recognition over the next decade. The International Triathlon Union (ITU) was established in 1989, and this led to the first world championships.

    The official distance was set at a 1,500-meter swim, a 40-kilometer bike and a 10-kilometer run. The race begins with a mass start where participants swim altogether. There is no rest in between the three legs and transition is a crucial part of the race strategy.

    Triathlon became even more popular in the next few years with many athletes considering the sport as their specialty.

    Swim, Bike, Run

    The modern triathlon consists of swimming, cycling, and running in that order. The transition times between each leg are also included in the participants total time. The race format will test the athletes endurance and determination.

    If you are interested in joining a triathlon race, chances are you have completed a road race before. It can be a 5K run, a marathon, or a long distance bike ride. Participants are categorized based on their age and gender. The casual ones are called age groupers, while the more serious athletes are Elites.

    Triathlon has its own set of rules. In addition to providing a level playing field for all most of the rules are designed for safety. Each discipline has its unique set of rules with some universal to all three. Most violations will result in time penalties from one to 12 minutes, depending on the length of the race and how bad the infraction is.

    One of the few

    It may seem that triathlon has become widespread, hearing and reading about it everywhere but the number of people completing the race makes anyone who crosses the finish line one of the few. A person who completes a triathlon event in any distance is considered an athlete of tremendous dedication and endurance.

    Despite its growing fame, you are actually joining a small population which people might call either extremely dedicated or just plain nuts. The level of craziness that they may attribute to you will most likely be based on your chosen distance. The longer the event, the crazier you are to them.

    People are probably scratching their heads right now but you are now on your way to achieving impressive cardiovascular health, endurance and powerful muscles. Preparing for a triathlon race is a social event as well. Many beginners and experienced triathletes form and/or join triathlon training clubs. You will not only complete the race on your own but you will also be surrounded by inspiring people and supportive spectators.

    Where to Start Types of Races, What you Need to Know and Where to Begin

    Congratulations! You have decided to join a triathlon. It means you are ready to complete three kinds of sport discipline in one event putting your body and mind to the test. The goals you will set for yourself will help determine what you will take away from this experience.

    Choose your Distance

    Triathlon comprises of swimming, biking, and running. Since the length of a race varies, the first step is to choose your preferred distance. These are the major distances:

    + Olympic or standard distance: 0.93-mile or 1.5-kilometer swim, 24.8-mile or 40-kilometer bike and 6.2-mile or 10-kilometer run;

    + Half Ironman: 1.2-mile or 1.93-kilometer swim, 56-mile or 90-kilometer bike, and 13-mile or 21-kilometer run;

    + Ironman: 2.4-mile or 3.9-kilometer swim, 112-mile or 180-kilometer bike, and 26.2-mile or 42.2-kilometer run (marathon distance);
