Insights on Karen Morris's A Year Without the Grocery Store
Insights from Chapter 1

#1

I keep peace and confidence down in my basement. I keep a sense of security next to my barrel of I can rest well tonight. I keep the smiles of my children on the same shelf as my hubbys sighs of relief.

#2

Food storage is about being proactive and taking steps to keep your family safe. It can save you money compared to regular groceries. Learning to follow sales and only stock up on whats on sale saves a lot of money.

#3

Food storage needs to be practiced in order to be effective. You need to make sure that your recipes taste good and that your food is properly prepared. You should also practice cooking with your food storage, as it is not always easy to do so.

#4

Food storage is a must for everyone. It doesnt mean you have to have a year or even six months, but you need something deeper than your average pantry. There is a philosophy of food storage that will make a difference in this world.

Insights from Chapter 2

#1

Food storage is a savings account that covers your deficit in funds if something happens and you cant purchase food. It can help you relax knowing that you have a years worth of food storage for only $160 per person.

#2

There are two types of food storage: short-term and long-term. Short-term food storage is meant to get you through small crises or get you over the hump in a long-term crisis. Long-term food storage is made up of basic ingredients that can be stored for 20 years or more.

#3

A variety bucket is a storage container that contains a variety of different meals, usually sealed in Mylar to keep oxygen, water, and light out. Each meal is as simple as add water and eat. These buckets are expensive, and they break the contents down for you: 1,916 calories a day for six weeks for one person, 2,012 calories a day for two people, or 4,000 calories a day for four people.

#4

The second type of long-term food storage is prepackaged ingredient buckets. These have many advantages, such as the fact that you can choose foods your family will eat. They are cheaper than variety buckets.

#5

Buying in bulk and packaging the ingredients yourself is the cheapest way to purchase long term food storage. You just have to package it yourself. There are only a few things to buy: the ingredients, the buckets, the Mylar bags, and oxygen absorbers.

#6

The biggest question that most people ask is from where do I get these things. There are four main types of places to get these things: bulk foods stores, co-ops, online food storage companies, and local LDS canneries.

#7

For your bulk food stores, you can find long-term food storage items at Costco, Sams, and BJs wholesale. You should be able to find things like #25 bags of flour, #10 bags of sugar, #25 bags of rice, containers of coconut oil, bulk spices, and even some freeze dried foods from time to time.

#8

My food storage comes from a co-op called Azure Standard. It is available online and in bulk quantities. I buy all my bulk spices through Azure at a fraction of the cost I could get them at the store.

#9

If you are buying items by unit, you may be able to get a discount at the bulk food section of your local grocery store.

#10

Food storage has become mainstream, and companies have emerged to cater to people who are seeking to provide their families with properly packaged food that will last.

#11

The last place to look for your long-term food storage is at a local Latter-day Saints cannery. I am not Mormon, but my mom was, and she put me in touch with a person who was. I purchased a variety of items here, such as wheat berries, flour, potato flakes, rice, macaroni, and sugar, for very low prices.

#12

If you need to provide your family with one year of meals in short order, there is a simple and relatively cheap way to do it. Purchase or obtain four five-gallon buckets, four Mylar bags, four 2000cc oxygen absorbers, four twenty-five-pound bags of bean soup mix, two sixteen-ounce bottles of bouillon cubes, and 365 days of vitamins per person.

#13

You will not get a wide variety of nutrients if you only store long-term food. You will not find five-gallon buckets with peas and spinach. You will have to grow your own vegetables.

#14

There are two main types of seeds: conventional seeds and heirloom seeds. Heirloom seeds have been saved for generations. If you plant an heirloom seed and get a productive tomato plant, you can take one or more of those tomatoes and if you save their seeds correctly, you can plant them the next year into more healthy tomato plants.

#15

To prepare for the year without the grocery store, you must first determine a place for your garden, plan your garden and purchase seeds for foods your family will eat, even if you wont be planting a garden until next year.

Insights from Chapter 3

#1

You can defeat the enemies of food storage by repackaging your food properly, and adding items to your storage that are affordable and palatable for your family.

#2

Keep the light out of your food storage. Light causes food to deteriorate, and it can also cause your food to break down. To solve this, store your food in opaque, food-grade plastic.

#3

The fix for this is so simple and easy. When you purchase Mylar bags to seal your food, you should also purchase oxygen absorbers. When used and placed properly, these handy little packets will save your food from oxidation.

#4

Oxygen absorbers require no more moisture than what you would find in the air. However, they do not tolerate any temperature fluctuations. If your storage containers are subjected to temperature swings, the same thing that happened to my windows last winter will happen to the food inside your buckets.

#5

The temperature at which you store your food is extremely important. The warmer the air temperature where you store your food, the shorter the time it will remain edible.

#6

Food can also be destroyed by pests if it is not stored properly. Moths can infest your food storage if it is not stored properly, and they can eat it from within.

#7

Food can lose its nutritional value over time. If your food wasnt packaged or purchased with the intention of it lasting thirty years, you must keep expiration dates in mind.

#8

To repackage your food for storage, start by determining how much food you will be purchasing on any given run. Then, obtain your buckets, and thoroughly wash them out with warm, soapy water and then rinse them down in a bleach solution to kill germs.

#9

There are six enemies of food storage: light, oxygen, moisture, temperature, pests, and time. Storing your food is not a difficult or time-consuming process, and there are plenty of foods that will keep for up to thirty years if stored properly.

Insights from Chapter 4

#1

To prepare, you must find at least two grocery stores from which you can get your food storage buckets for free or at least really cheap.

Insights from Chapter 5

#1

Food storage is about saving money. You should start with long-term food storage, which is your general safety net. Your project savings account is your short-term food storage, and it allows you to eat comfort foods that your family loves but it costs a little more and takes more time to gather.

#2

The amount of food storage you need is dependent on how long you want your short-term storage to last. While most people start out with three to six months of storage, you can start with anything as short as a week.

#3

Once you have your list of meals, look for common denominators that will help you determine if any of the suggestions will make useful meals for food storage. Meals with dry, boxed, or canned ingredients and that are easy to make are ideal.
