In work and in love, life has taught seasoned police officer Jack that closeness only leads to pain. But Jack is wracked with guilt when his rookie partner Kevin is shot during an undercover assignment and dies in his arms. Why didnt he take the time to get to know the rookie a little?
At the funeral, Jack takes a liking to Kevins brother, Devin. But Jack knows making a connection can cause more hurt, and living on opposite coasts is an added obstacle.
With his brother dead, Devin feels a responsibility to Kevin's pregnant widow, Marie. He packs up and moves east, only to have Marie, outraged that hes put his life on hold, slam the door in his face. Devin turns to the only other person he knows in town. As much as it goes against his philosophies on life, Jack takes him in without hesitation.
Their tentative exploration into romance is interrupted when Devin is mistaken for his dead brother and taken captive. Just as Jack opens his heart, reality slams into him. But he cant lose anyone else. More than the need to simply save a captive drives Jack to find Devin and bring him home.

It Should Have Been You
The story is well written, it made me feel every emotion the boys did. Their love for each other is sweet and very strong.

Mrs. Condit Reads
Dont let the strong content or portrayal of reality keep you from reading this incredible story of one boys strength to make it against the odds. I offer a huge thank you to the author for bringing this story into focus. We need to shine a bright light and create awareness to reduce the potential for similar tragedies.

When Dachshunds Ruled the Serengeti
Murphy gives us two outstanding characters in Jose and Phillip and the interaction between them is heartwarming. As for the dogs on the Serengeti, you will have to read the book to find out about them.

C HAPTER O NE U NDERCOVER O PERATION
B EFORE IT happened, Jack knew exactly what was coming. Before anyone had pulled out a gun, it was all crystal clear to him. But he was powerless to stop it. Once the chain of events started, the outcome was inevitable. There was just no way humanly possible for Jack to change the course of actions that had been set in motion. He couldnt move fast enough or yell loud enough or dissuade anyone from the course they were on. All Jack could do was watch helplessly. And that fact hurt him more than if he had been hit by one of the bullets flying through the air in his direction.
You didnt do the job Jack did for as many years as he had and be as good at it as he was and not be able to read a situation. And Jack could read this situation from the moment it had started to go bad. Had he been alone, he knew he could probably have gotten through it without any guns being pulled, shots being fired, or blood being shed. But Jack was not alone. He had the rookie with him that day. The Kid.
The guy wasnt really a kid. He was twenty-six years old, a full-grown man. But he was so young and new. And it just hurt Jack so much to know before it happened what was coming next. It hurt him to his core to know that the Kid wouldnt live to see twenty-seven.
Before they had gone in on this undercover assignment, Jack had talked to the Kid and told him how he saw the whole thing going down. He had patiently gone through what seemed like all the different scenarios that might play out, ways things could happen, ways things could go wrong. When Jack had felt the Kid was ready for the assignment, his boss had agreed and signed off on the undercover op. Jack didnt know what more he could have done, but clearly there was something more he should have donehe just didnt know what.
The bottom line was that the Kid panicked. When the yelling started and the dealer began making all kinds of threats, gesticulating wildly, ranting, doing everything but thumping his chest, Jack was prepared. He expected it because he knew it was all part of the macho negotiating process that guys like this dealer had to go through. Jack was ready. He had thought the Kid was ready too. But unfortunately he was very, very wrong on that one. Something spooked the Kid, and despite all kinds of warnings from Jack before they went in not to draw his weapon unless he had absolutely no choice, the Kid had done exactly what he was not supposed to do. And that simple move started a chain reaction.
