PREFACE TO THE SECOND EDITION.
The first edition of the Chapters of Coming Forth by Day, or the Theban Recension of the Book of the Dead, appeared in 1897, the work consisting of three volumes, viz., Egyptian Text, Translation and Vocabulary. The sale of all the volumes proved that the edition was needed, and in a very few years it was exhausted, and copies could only be obtained at second hand. In 1901 a reprint of the English translation was published in the present Series, and when the edition was exhausted in 1908, Messrs Kegan Paul, Trench, Trbner and Co. decided to publish in the Series a new edition of the Chapters of Coming Forth by Day, Egyptian Text, Translation and Vocabulary complete. The English translation, with many additions, has already been issued, and all the coloured and half-tone plates given in the first edition have been reproduced. An entirely new section has been introduced containing a brief general description of the contents of each Chapter, and of the purpose with which it was written. The Egyptian Text and Vocabulary follow, and it is hoped that the handy form in which the work now appears will be found convenient to those who will use it.
The ancient Egyptian Hymns and Religious Texts printed in the following pages form a representative collection of the compositions which the Egyptians inscribed upon the walls of tombs, sarcophagi, coffins, stelae, amulets, etc. to ensure the well-being of their dead in the Other World. Taken together they are known generally as the Book of the Dead, and because they have been edited chiefly from documents found at Thebes, they are said to form the Theban Recension of that work. This Recension was in general use in Egypt from about B. C. 1600 to B. C. 900. Many of the ideas and beliefs embodied in these texts are coaeval with Egyptian civilization, and we are now able to trace their history in textual form back to the Vth and VIth dynasties (about B. C. 3500). The greater number of the texts here given belong to the great group to which the Egyptians gave the name Chapters of Coming Forth by Day
; the remainder are Hymns, supplementary extracts from ancient cognate works, rubrics, etc., which were believed to give the dead strength to resist the attacks of foes, and to withstand the powers of darkness and of the grave, and enabled them to enjoy everlasting happiness.
The papyri selected as authorities are the best now known, and they have been chosen with the view of illustrating the development of the Theban Recension, and the changes which took place in it during the various periods of its history. Since no papyrus contains all the Chapters of this Recension, and no two papyri agree either in respect of contents or arrangement of the Chapters, and the critical value of every text in any given papyrus is not always the same, it follows that a complete edition of all the known Chapters of the Theban Recension would be impossible unless recourse were had to several papyri. Among those used in the present edition, of special value is the Papyrus of Nu (Brit. Mus. No. 10,477), from which I have printed 111 Chapters. Among these are at least twenty Chapters of the Theban Recension which exist in no other papyrus, and several others which are known from single manuscripts only. In the case of Chapters of great importance,
