DUOMO MUSEUM TOUR

Museo dellOpera del Duomo

Brunelleschis dome, Ghibertis bronze doors, and Donatellos statuesthese creations define the 1400s (the Quattrocento) in Florence, when the city blossomed and classical arts were reborn. All are featured at the Duomo Museum, plus a Michelangelo Piet that was intended as his sculptural epitaph. While copies now decorate the exteriors of the Duomo (cathedral), Baptistery, and Campanile (bell tower, called Giottos Tower), the original sculptured masterpieces of the complex are now restored and displayed safely indoors, filling the Duomo Museum. This refurbished museum is a delight, though its overlooked by most visitors to Florence. Theres never a line.

The panels of Ghibertis original bronze doors for the Baptistery have taken turns being restored in a multiyear process. As of late June 2012, all of the panels should be on display (but in preparation, none will be viewable from 2011 until then).
