George W as hington stopped going to school when he was 15 .
N ot a lot is known f or sure about Washi ngtons childhood, but it is known his formal education ended when he w as around 15 years old. He didnt e ven go to college !
H is father , Augustine, died when Geor ge was 11 yea rs old, and there wasn t enough money to send George away to college. Instead, he tra ined as a survey or and read math books to get bett er at this job.

George Washingto n was given an ax as a gift when he was a child, and he used it to chop at his father s cherry tree. When his father aske d him what happened to the tree, George said he couldnt t ell a lie; he cut the tree.
This story , which was meant to show young Georges honest y, most likely never happened. It was in vented by a writer named Mason Locke Weems.

George Washingto n once threw a silver dollar across the Potomac River .
It was reported by W ashington s great- gr andson that he once threw a piece of slate across the Rappahannock River , w hich is much narrower than the Po tomac.
