FOREWORD
K9 EXPERT EDUCATION
If you have brought a Maltese into your home from a responsible breeder or a rescue group or if you are planning to do so congratulations! You have fallen in love with one of the most appealing breeds in all of dogdom. The Maltese is affectionate and energetic despite his small size, and the breed has been adored by many admirers throughout history.
The small, white fluffy dogs known collectively as bichons have been popular in the Mediterranean region for thousands of years. Those that lived on the island of Malta, off the southern coast of Italy, were known as Maltese. The breed was once called Ye Ancient Dogge of Malta, a testament to his reign of more than 28 centuries as a canine aristocrat.
While the Phoenicians made Malta their home in about 1500 B.C., the island was populated by other Mediterranean peoples as far back as 3500 B.C. Malta was famed for its opulence, appreciation of the arts and high level of civilization. Here, the tiny Maltese thrived.
No owner was more devoted to his Maltese than Publius, the Roman governor of Malta. In the first century AD, the poet Martial wrote of this royal creature that Issa is more frolicsome than Catullas sparrow ... purer than a doves kiss ... gentler than a maiden ... [and] more precious than Indian gems. Publius had a portrait commissioned so he could treasure her likeness forever.

A host of other classical poets, writers and philosophers have also praised the beauty, intelligence and sweetness of the Maltese. The Greeks built tombs in tribute to their Maltese. Greek ceramic art depicting the dogs dates back to the fifth century. Queens reportedly served their Maltese the finest food out of gold vases. A model of a Maltese was even unearthed in Egypt.
The first Maltese exhibited in the United States was listed as a Maltese Lion Dog at the inaugural Westminster Kennel Club dog show in New York City in 1877.
For centuries, Maltese have been the cherished pets of royalty, socialites, divas and film stars. Actress Elizabeth Taylor has always been devoted to the breed, even keeping her dogs on a private yacht while she filmed in England. Hotelier and businesswoman Leona Helmsley left a fortune in her will to her pet Maltese, ensuring that the dog would want for nothing after her owner passed. Such is the loyalty that this refined, immaculate toy breed inspires.
The Maltese is single coated, with long, flat, silky white hair practically reaching the ground. The hair on the dogs head may be tied up in a topknot or left hanging. While a Malteses full coat flowing around the show ring is a breathtaking sight, his owner must invest many hours each week in grooming to achieve that pristine result. Most owners keep them in a more manageable puppy cut, which gives their dogs the freedom to play on carpets and grass.
While the Maltese appears fearless, at 4 to 7 pounds this breed isnt appropriate for young children who could accidentally injure the dogs without meaning to. For older, gentle children, the Maltese can make a loving companion.

The breeds universal popularity is understandable. The Maltese is a charming and gentle creature, among the sweetest of all little dogs.

The Malteses popularity is essentially a tried-and-true recipe. For centuries, these delightful little dogs have been cherished and refined, making them premier companions. The Malteses best features arent just his irresistibly adorable appearance. You may find yours to be a surprise package if you were expecting nothing more than a pretty bit of arm candy. Maltese may be one of the worlds smallest breeds, but they are also undeniably athletic, bold and courageous. The Malteses personality definitely does not take a backseat to looks.
MALTESE PERSONALITY
If you are lucky enough to spend any time with a Maltese, you will quickly discover that his presence is a perfect remedy for boredom or sadness. Maltese have no intentions of being ignored. They will employ some ingenious methods to prevent it, raising your spirits and entertaining you in the process. This might include anything from an impromptu play session to an affectionate cuddle that you didnt realize you needed.

The Maltese has a profuse coat. It requires considerable grooming, and Maltese owners need to be willing to spend time brushing their dogs. If youre not planning on showing your Maltese, consider keeping her in a puppy cut. Five minutes with a brush and a quick wipe of the eyes each day can keep a pet Maltese looking spiffy.
This doesnt imply that Maltese crave nonstop attention and reassurance. The typical Maltese wont have any trouble keeping himself occupied, although he will likely ensure that you are never bored in the process. As long as he is with you, he can be equally happy hiking in the woods or acting as a bed warmer.
The Maltese is an excellent choice for urban dog lovers, but these versatile little dogs can adapt to a tremendous range of lifestyles if you are prepared to provide daily care, attention and exercise. The Maltese is not a delicate little flower.
If given the opportunity, a Maltese will happily reveal the full extent of his athletic and intellectual prowess. They have demonstrated their talents at competitive dog sports ranging from agility to tracking. Even more surprising is the breeds talent as a watchdog. A Maltese will not hesitate to sound the alarm or defend his territory (or owner) against any threat. His repertoire of canine instincts also includes a strong predatory drive. Historical accounts of the breed include many descriptions of their skill as vermin hunters. However, this drive is usually expressed today through exuberant playfulness, such as hunting squeaky toys.
