A fifteen-year-old girl is found lying unconscious in the street, naked but for a cheap plastic raincoat, and haemorrhaging badly after having given birth within the last 36 hours. But the baby is nowhere to be found. Meanwhile Yuki Castellano is trying a case against a woman accused of killing her husband. The evidence is overwhelming and Yuki is certain of winning a conviction. But the accused is a renowned heart surgeon and her attorney specialises in criminal defence of the wealthy. This case might not be a straightforward as Yuki had hoped. Lindsay and Yukis close friend and fellow member of the Womens Murder Club reporter Cindy Thomas is investigating a terrifying story. Two women have reported recent sexual assaults, but neither can remember anything of the attacks. Are these two incidents linked? Will this be the start of a string of attacks? Prologue
WITH BELLS ON
One

THIS WAS THE DAY I was getting married.

Our suite at the Ritz in Half Moon Bay was in chaos. My best friends and I had stripped down to our underwear, and our street clothes had been flung over the furniture. Sorbet-colored dresses hung from the moldings and door frames.

The scene looked like a Degas painting of ballerinas before the curtain went up, or maybe a romanticized bordello in the Wild West. Jokes were cracked. Giddiness reigned and then the door opened and my sister Catherine stepped in, wearing her brave face: a tight smile, pain visible at the corners of her eyes.

Whats wrong, Cat? I asked.

Hes not here.

I blinked, tried to ignore the sharp pang of disappointment. I said sarcastically, Well, theres a shock.

Cat was talking about our father, Marty Boxer, who left home when we were kids and failed to show when my mom was dying. Id seen him only twice in the past ten years and hadnt missed him, but after hed told Cat hed come to my wedding, Id had an expectation.
