When to Go

HIGH SEASON (JUNAUG)

Weather at its best. Accommodation rates at their highest (especially for August school holidays).

England on a Shoestring

If youre a shoestring traveller, theres no getting around it England isnt cheap. Public transport, admission fees, restaurants and hotel rooms all tend to be expensive compared to many other European countries. But with some careful planning, that doesnt mean an English trip has to break the bank. You can save money by staying in B&Bs instead of hotels, or hostels instead of B&Bs. Another option is the chain of motels along motorways and outside large towns. You can also save considerably, by prebooking long-distance travel by coach or train and by avoiding the times when everyone else is on the move (such as Friday afternoon). Many attractions are free (or off er discounts on quiet days (eg Mondays). And dont forget that you wont have to stump up a penny to enjoy Englands best asset: the wonderful countryside and coastline.

Apart from the postcard-perfect villages and rugged hiking trails of the Peak District, the delights of this peaceful corner of the country lie largely off the tourist radar. Away from the sprawling industrial centres of Nottingham, Leicester and Derby, the East Midlands is a rolling carpet of farmland, dotted with historic market towns, ruined castles, spellbinding cathedrals and lavish stately homes. At its best, its the England you were expecting after reading all those Jane Austen novels. Where you go in the region will depend on your temperament. City slickers are drawn to Nottingham, with its lively nightlife and Robin Hood connections, while foodies head to Leicester to sample the imported culinary delights of the Indian subcontinent. Fans of the great outdoors make for the Peak District in their hundreds of thousands. However, you may find more peace and quiet in the backwaters of Rutland and Lincolnshire.

When to Go

The East Midlands is at its best in summer, when the countryside comes alive with village fetes and festivals. For walkers and cyclists, June through September is the high season in the Peak District. May brings flowers, parades and pagan goings-on to Castletons Garland Festival, while February/March brings the wonderful chaos of Shrovetide football to Ashbourne.
