Youre alive now, but you know that wont last forever, and so you have no doubt wondered what might happen when you die. Philosophers and organized religion alike have sought to answer this age-old question ever since man had the temerity to ask it in the first place. Adding fuel to the speculation are the supposed eyewitness accounts of the other side that we refer to as near-death experiences.

Yes, just as thousands of years ago an Egyptian construction worker might have gotten knocked off his scaffold by a piece of falling pyramid only to report an NDE, there are still people who claim to have seen what lies beyond deaths door. Those of us who have considered the big questions in life cant help but be intrigued by such narratives.

I can clearly remember the first time I came upon the concept of near-death experiences; it was a real eye-opener. I was 10 years old and had just barely conceived of mortality, but after raiding my older brothers bookshelf for a copy of Raymond A. Moodys classic Life After Life (pretty heavy stuff for a 10-year-old, huh?), I was hooked.

Even at that young age, the idea of our consciousness continuing after this life seemed like a powerful and alluring topic. But as I progressed through my reading, I got past the question of what might happen when we die. I began to consider another question: Why are we here at all?

Those are the two main questions religions the world over have attempted to come to grips with for millennia: What happens when we die, and why are we here in the first place? But beyond the whys and all the what happens, as my ten-year-old brain searched for answers, I stumbled upon an even bigger question. Not so much why are we here, but how are we here?

I began to think to myself: If we were created by God, then who created God? Where did God come from? How could something just exist with no beginning and end? Suddenly everything seemed impossible. Nothing should exist. There shouldnt be any people, animals, or Earth at all; there should be just a blank page of nothing!

The human mind follows a natural progression, and in our minds it doesnt make sense that something could have no beginning and no end. However, this impossibility is what our limited understanding is forced to accept. Even if you take the concept of God out of the equation and turn to science, science cannot explain this conundrum any better. In fact, it gets worse.

Because if you believe in the theory of the Big Bang, you logically have to ask yourself, where did the Big Bang come from? If all of creation began as one finite molecule that exploded into existence 14 billion years ago, then where did that molecule come from? How did it just spontaneously pop into existence all by itself? Or how could it just exist for all eternity with no beginning or end in sight?

No mother, no father, no creator or parent electron; that molecule just existed, for no apparent reason. As you can see, you end up back at square one. Just as we cant figure out who created God, from the scientific perspective we cant explain where that molecule came from or why the Big Bang went bang in the first place. There are no easy answers to these questions.

This is what is so intriguing about near-death experiences. Those whove had them seem to have been given a glimpse outside of our current understanding of reality, and the priceless gems of information they return with might facilitate a better understanding of these cosmic mysteries. It may not give us all of the answers we seek during our finite human existence, but at least its a start.

The term near death experience can be incredibly evocative. While for some it might simply suggest the proximity to an accident or a personal tragedy, the meaning behind a near death experience is often a great deal more spiritual.

For those who have been involved in a near death experience (or NDE), the event is not just a health or mortal concern. Instead, the process of moving close to the end of life and coming back again is enough to encourage questions of what lies beyond this plane of existence, and what their death means to a wider world. For those who have been unfortunate enough to have an NDE, the process can be traumatic, life affirming, terrifying, and a life-defining moment.

The accounts of those involved in a near death experiences can differ wildly. There are often similarities, but many of the most interesting aspects of the phenomena arise from the slight variations in accounts which are given by those who have approached death and returned back to tell the tale.

Whether a person has been clinically dead or has simply come dangerously close, the rise in modern medicine has certainly increased our ability to save lives. As well as this, however, it has blurred the line between the living and the dead, changing the place at which we might consider a person beyond the pale of existence. For those who have near death experiences, what information, stories, and warnings do they have to tell the rest of the world?

Perhaps the first thing which we should do is to define the near death experience. This can be difficult, with many of the most famous examples differing hugely in the specific details. There are, however, a number of shared aspects and common experiences which can help us to define these events and can help us learn more about what people are experiencing.

The most important attribute is always the life of the person. We label these events near death experiences because of their proximity to death. Because there is such a final quality to our lives, the ability to come so close to death and to return will inevitably give these events a more revered quality, especially when compared to the more turgid experiences which we may encounter in our day-to-day lives.
