A quick ferry ride from the Kyushu port town of Kagoshima, the island of is a world of jagged mountains and primeval moss-strewn forests. This Unesco World Heritage island is a hiker's paradise, where you can spend the day exploring the peaks and then soak your bones in seaside onsen, some of which are at the water's edge and can only be entered when the tide is right. For non-hikers, there are sandy beaches and snorkelling to enjoy.

Theres nothing like lowering yourself into the tub at a classic Japanese onsen (). You can feel the muscles in your back relax and the 'ahhh' that you emit is just a simple way of saying 'Damn, Im glad I came to Japan!' If youre lucky, the tub is outside and theres a nice stream running nearby. The Japanese have turned the simple act of bathing into a folk religion and the country is dotted with temples and shrines to this most relaxing of faiths.
