ABOUT THE AUTHOR

Gavin Thomas has worked for Rough Guides as a writer and editor since 1998. He is also the author of the Rough Guides to Oman and Sri Lanka and has contributed to numerous other Rough Guides including books on Myanmar, Cambodia, Rajasthan and India. His first experience of Dubai was during an unscheduled six-hour stopover at the airport, which impressed him so much that he decided to come back for more the only time he has formed a lasting relationship with a major city on the basis of its duty-free facilities. He hopes one day to be able to walk down Al Fahidi Street without being offered a fake watch, and to say something in Arabic which somebody actually understands.

Acknowledgements

Author : Thanks to Andy Turner for launching me on yet another Dubai flight of fancy, and to my exemplary editor Emma Gibbs for keeping the project airborne and remarkably free of turbulence at all times. To map-maestro Ed Wright for navigational assistance, image-guru Aude Vauconsant for visual inspiration, and to Susie Jolley, Deborah Arantes, Lucy Scaramanga, Mandy Caplan and Katie Bennett for valuable info, assistance and in-flight refreshments along the way. Also to Laura and Jamie, because I didnt mention them last time, and of course to Allison, for letting me go in the first place, and then for coming out in person and teaching me how to shop properly.

A ROUGH GUIDE TO ROUGH GUIDES

Published in 1982, the first Rough Guide to Greece was a student scheme that became a publishing phenomenon. Mark Ellingham, a recent graduate in English from Bristol University, had been travelling in Greece the previous summer and couldnt find the right guidebook. With a small group of friends he wrote his own guide, combining a highly contemporary, journalistic style with a thoroughly practical approach to travellers needs.
