Well congratulations, because by reading this guide, you are well on your way to being a Pokmon master, equipped with all the necessary skills, knowledge, and Pok-know-how to excel at the wildly popular mobile game. We are glad to have you among our ranks.

Here is what capturing Pokmon looks like.

So what is Pokmon GO exactly? Simply put, Pokmon GO is an app for your smartphone, where you are able to capture and battle monsters in a new game based on the hugely popular Game Boy game, trading cards, and anime series. Pikachu, Jigglypuff, and Squirtle are back to say hello.

The purpose of the game is to collect Pokmon wherever you are and battle them at gyms. The game uses the Google map on your phone as your playing field. If youre strolling on the beach, you will likely encounter lots of Water-based Pokmon. If youre hiking through the mountains, youll likely encounter Rock- or Ground-based Pokmon. Because the game is based off of your current location, youre encouraged to explore new areas to find different types of Pokmon to capture, allowing you to see a side of your town or city that youve never seen before.

But before you start your journey to being a Pokmon GO master, youre going to have to learn the basics of the game. Here, youll learn how to catch Pokmon, what evolving a Pokmon means, what PokStops are, how to battle and win at gyms, and more.

CHAPTER 1

GETTING STARTED

The purpose of Pokmon GO is to catch lots of Pokmon and use them to battle other peoples Pokmon. You do this by exploring different areas, seeing what monsters are there, and capturing them for your collection. The game will look differently if youre sitting at your own house or driving around. You dont really win at Pokmon GO, you just try to do as much as you can and have as much fun as you can along the way.

You play Pokmon GO with your cell phone, where the game is ever changing with new maps and Pokmon to catch based on wherever you go. If you go to New York City, youll see a different map than if you were in the suburbs. If you went to the beach, youll see a different map than if you were in the mountains.

There are going to be some terms that you encounter in Pokmon GO and in this book that you should know. You can come back here in case you see a word that isnt familiar, or if you have difficulty understanding something.

P OKMON :

These are the little monsters that you can catch and battle with each other throughout the game. Each Pokmon has its own name, like Pikachu or Charmander. Each Pokmon also has its own type, like Fire, Water, Rock, or Electric. Some of these Pokmon appear a lot more often in the game, while others are rarer and dont show up as often. This is why you have to go to new places to see new Pokmon. If you go to a friends house who lives further away, you might find they have different Pokmon than those you see at your house.

T RAINER :

This is your player, the person you control in the game. You get to name them and pick out their clothing. Think of this person as the mini-version of you in the game. You dont see anyone elses trainer moving around in the game, only your own.

P OK B ALL :

This is what you use to catch Pokmon. The first Pok Balls you can use are red on top and white on bottom. You throw them at Pokmon to try and capture them in the balls. Some Pok Balls like Great and Ultra Balls are more effective than others.

A UGMENTED R EALITY :

This means that you can play parts of the game using your camera, seeing whatever your phone is pointed at. So if youre trying to catch a Pokmon at the dinner table and your phone is aimed at the food on your table, your phone will show the Pokmon hanging out on all your food. If youre trying to catch a Pokmon and your phone is pointed at the Lady Liberty, that means when you look at your phone, itll look like that Pokmon is in front of the Statue of Liberty. This part of the game is really fun because youll be able to see Pokmon in places youre at right then and there.

C AMERA :

This is where you can take a picture of a Pokmon youre trying to capture in the game. This is where you can get some really funny photos of your Pokmon in real life. Just press the button when you see the Pokmon and save the photo. But always use good judgement in where you battle and photograph your Pokmon.

P OWERING UP :

This is how you make your Pokmon stronger for when you battle others at gyms. You need certain items to power up.

E VOLVING :

This means that you are taking one of your Pokmon and powering up into a different version of the monster. So when we take a Pikachu and evolve it, that Pokmon then becomes Raichu. Raichu looks similar to Pikachu but hes a lot stronger. Pokmon can only evolve into certain other Pokmon in their evolutionary cycles. And some cant evolve at all. To evolve Pokmon, you need Candy and Stardust, which are items you get from playing the game.

P OKDEX :

This shows every Pokmon that youve tried to, or successfully caught, in the wild. It only shows one Pokmon of each type, so if youve tried to capture five Pikachus in the game, youll still only see one here. Touch the Pok Ball on the main screen to access the Pokdex.

M AP :

This is where you see everything you can explore in the game. This is where youll find PokStops, gyms, and where you can see Pokmon appear.
