Introduction
Tips for Bento Boxes
Find a box
Do not overthink. Sure, if you want to use the hard carton boxes the Japanese use to create their Bento boxes. You can now find then in certain specialized stores, but you dont have to. Find a container that is suitable for your needs. If you are packing something that needs to be refrigerated, there are some that include some ice packs. You can choose some very colorful boxes to please your kids and make them possibly eat more veggies! Also, make sure you have the required tiny containers to insert in the box as needed, for salad dressing or other small items you might want to add. You should pick out as many boxes as there is family members, so everyone has an assigned one.
Create a balanced meal
Because you are creating Bento boxes, it does not mean that you will just throw in some random unhealthy snacks. Not at all! Simply make sure you do include proteins, carbs, veggies and fruits and dairy products if your diet allows it.
Create a meal that is pleasing the eye!
Play with the colors, this is the beauty of packing a Bento box. Some great red foods: grape tomatoes, red grapes, raspberries, strawberries. Add also yellows: corn, yellow bell peppers or greens such as broccoli, spinach, peas, edamame, then more neutral colors such as brown rice, couscous or crackers.
Packaging the box
Because you are going to pack many different types of food within the same box or container, you want to smartly pack them. Some food items really should not be touching others. If your box does not include some separated compartments, then you should plan to pack the food tightly, so they dont move around too much.

Simple Taco Bento Box
In this Mexican Bento, you can add many different toppings and make it a different meal every day. I enjoy adding some colorful sides such as corn salads, salsa or guacamole. Make sure you select your favorite tortillas, either the soft ones and the hard ones.
Servings:
Preparation time: 15-30 minutes
Ingredients:
2 taco shells (soft or hard). I think soft is better, the hard ones tend to break easily
cup shredded cooked chicken
cup shredded lettuce
2 Tbsp. salsa
2 tbsp. sour cream
3 Tbsp. shredded Cheddar cheese
Method:
- For the sour cream and salsa, I often accumulate some packets when I go out to eat to Mexican restaurants, if you dont have them handy, then use small containers.
- Use a little bag to hold the cheese.
- You can lay the lettuce on the very bottom of the box or container.
- On one side, place the grilled or cooked chicken you have already prepared.
- On the other side, place the taco shells.
- It will be ready to assemble when you open the box!
- Keep in the refrigerator until ready to eat.
Colorful Pasta Salad and Sides Bento Box
Whenever I make pasta salad, I tend to make extra, so I can pack some Bento boxes for everyone in the family. It does not matter too much what pasta salad is your favorite, but in this case, we suggest a meat free, so go vegetarian for a light lunch. Add some fruits or perhaps cheese and nuts on the side and you have a very filling lunch for sure.
Servings:
Preparation time: 15-30 minutes

Pasta salad
1 box uncooked favorite shape of pasta (penne, shells or other)
cup sliced Kalamata olives

- Also add some sliced cucumbers and whole fresh strawberries in their respective spots.
- Store in refrigerator for later consumption.
