Thats where meal preppingor, as we like to call it, the gift you give your future selfcomes in. And if we do say so ourselves, the recipes in this book make excellent giftswe designed them with meal prep in mind.
Every chapter here begins with a call to Make It Meal Prep, which features a recipe for a delicious, versatile dish along with four different (and super simple!) ways to eat it. So you can have your zucchini fritters (see ) and eat them (for four meals), too!
Handy Tools
Here at Tasty, we dont think you need an arsenal of professional-grade kitchen tools to cook seriously delicious food. If youve got some, awesome (alsocan we borrow your strawberry huller?). But if youre a little light in the gadget department, fear not. Theres no need to blow your budget (or create a fake wedding registry!) to stock your kitchen, but we do have recommendations for a few tools that will make the recipes in this book even easier and faster. If youre feeling overwhelmed with all the options out there, Tastys line of kitchenwarewhich you can find at Walmart stores and onlinehas great, inexpensive versions of a lot of these.
Slow cooker: If youre short on time, this little buddy will be an invaluable addition to your kitchen (especially if youre eyeing the slow cooker recipes in this book). A slow cooker allows you to prepare food at a low temperature andyou guessed it!slowly. One of our favorite things about it is that you truly can set it and forget it. You dont even need to be in the house while its doing its thing, making it perfect for anyone with a busy schedule. And just to (slowly) sweeten the deal, you can get a basic, functional slow cooker for under $30.
Multipurpose cooker: Much like Tasty chefs, multipurpose cookers are culinary jacks-of-all-trades. While some are heavier on the bells and whistles than others (oh hello, yogurt maker), most multi-cookersincluding the ubiquitous favorite, the Instant Potwill be able to pressure cook, steam, saut, sear, and slow cook. Pressure cookinga technique called for in some of our recipesuses steams pressure to raise the boiling temperature of water so that food cooks much faster, while at the same time forcing more liquid into whatever youre cooking. TLDR: If your favorite kind of meat is falling off the bone, youre gonna love the pressure cooker. Besides making short work of tough meat, pressure cooking is also a quick way to cook rice, beans, and even hard-boiled eggs. We think were in love.
Chefs knife: If youre going to buy one knife, a chefs knife is the way to go. Its incredibly versatileyoull use it for everything from chopping veggies to carving up a chicken. A chefs knife can cost anywhere from $15 to thousands of dollars (seriously!), but the most important consideration in buying a knife is how it feels in your hand. Its best to try before you buy so you can be sure the knife you pick feels good in your hand. Just like with work and life, or your bank account, balance is key. A good way to test a knifes balance is to hold it in your hand and loosen your grip slightlya well-balanced knife wont tip forward immediately.
No matter how fancy your knife, its impor-tant to keep it sharp. Not to put too fine a point on it, but if your blade is dull, things could get a littledicey. It might sound counter-intuitive, but a sharp knife is much safer than a dull one, because its more precise and less likely to skid and slip, taking out a finger as it goes down. TBH, a sharp knife makes cutting faster, too. Many kitchen stores will sharpen your knives for you, or if you prefer to DIY, you can purchase a sharpening device or stone. Additionally, you can ensure your knives are smooth by using a honing steel to keep the blades centered and straight.
