Chapter 1: The UnResolution Philosophy
It is not the critic who counts; not the man who points out how the strong man stumbles, or where the doer of deeds could have done them better. The credit belongs to the man who is actually in the arena, whose face is marred by dust and sweat and blood; who strives valiantly; who errs, who comes short again and again, because there is no effort without error and shortcoming; but who does actually strive to do the deeds; who knows great enthusiasms, the great devotions; who spends himself in a worthy cause; who at the best knows in the end the triumph of high achievement, and who at the worst, if he fails, at least fails while daring greatly, so that his place shall never be with those cold and timid souls who neither know victory nor defeat.

This is not another self-help book.
There are too many of those, and more information is likely not what you need.
UnResolution is a philosophy, a way of life, a proven, tested, and simple way to achieve the results youve aimed for, once and for all.
However, just because its simple doesnt necessarily mean its easy. In fact, over the years Ive spent studying what makes humans tick and why some achieve world-class success while others stay stuck in mud, the power of simplicity comes up time and time again.
That and a few other timeless principles are the backbone of the book youre reading right now.
UnResolution has five core philosophies:
- A calendar year does nothing for our ability to change. We place so much pressure on ourselves to change the hardwiring, the neurological and chemical makeup of who we are, including countless subconscious habits, simply because a 6 went to a 7 or a 7 went to an 8 or a 99 went to a 00. Thats the same line of thinking as taking a Toyota into the shop on a Monday night and demanding a Ferrari on a Tuesday morning, yelling at the mechanic when it didnt happen and leaving upset, frustrated, and angry.
- Time is an illusion and can be collapsed. Most people have a troubling and unhealthy relationship with time. Instead of using it to our advantage, we get sucked into scarcity thinking, believing that we never have enough, and we perpetuate this belief on a daily, weekly, monthly, yearly, and lifetime basis. Due to past behaviors, we dont trust ourselves to be focused and productive, and we believe creating results in life means five years of work or a decade or more. Time, like everything else in life, is simply a resource. It is not a question of how much we have, but how much we can extract and what we decide to do with ita matter of resourcefulness, not resources. It also can be both expanded and contracted, at will.
- Complexity breeds distraction. There are four billion people who have access to the Internet, which means there are four billion people who have enough information to do practically anything: start their own business, get in unbelievable shape, run a marathon, start an Amazon business, learn to be a speaker or how to cook or knit, and anything else you could ever imagine. Yet, most of us are not better off with this information; instead, its had a reverse effect on our progress. Complexity is the silent killer in our lives as it breeds too many options, which lead to indecision, distraction, and procrastination.
- Our goal setting mechanisms are broken. Across all personality and lifestyle types, urgency matters. Urgency keeps us producing and in action, yet our current goal-setting techniques are severely lacking in urgency. Lets face it, if we have a choice between going to a movie and getting more work done at the end of the day, were going to choose the former because weve already made too many decisions that drained our willpower. However, if we can manufacture urgency, we can accomplish things in 90 days or less that would have normally taken us a year.
- Freedom is relative to the amount of structure in our lives. Ask most people what they want out of life, and freedom will come up time and time again. The paradox is that the more structure we incorporate into our days, the more freedom were able to create in our lives. To quote Paulo Coelho, author of The Alchemist , Discipline and freedom are not mutually exclusive but mutually dependent because otherwise, youd sink into chaos.
This book was intended to be an actionable tool you can take with you, open up at any time during the year, and simply make a decision.
Whether its March, July, or September, I want you to understand the following:
Youre only one decision away from living the life youve only imagined.
The word decision means to cut off , allowing space for new opportunities and perspectives to enter your life.
Once you understand this on a deep level, youll be able to ditch resolutions forever and lead the life youve always wantedand never look back.
Why Youre Reading This Book
Every year, typically during the holiday season, on New Years Eve, or on our birthdays, most of us do a little reflecting, thinking, or full-blown soul searching. In our fast-paced world of tweets, tasks, news stories, and unending things to do, this time can be quite therapeuticbut, it can also be dark.
Were not used to slowing down, and its scary. David Harshada Wagner, a spiritual teacher and mens coach, once said on my podcast, Resist Average Academy:
If people truly slowed down and looked at it, they probably wouldnt be too happy with their lives.
