Introduction: A Diligent Seeker of a Chemical-Free Life
M y name is Kirsten, pronounced Kear-sten . Probably due to bluntly correcting and defending the pronunciation of my name since I could speak, I grew up a bit of a tomboy. My first experience with makeup was my junior Christmas formal. My older sister and my mother held me down while they applied mascara (a horrible experience) and other items to make me beautiful. I felt like I had spiders on my eyesand I am beyond terrified of spiders. When I finally decided to marry, one of my biggest qualifications was whether my future husband could beat me at arm wrestling. Needless to say, beauty techniques were far from my mind. Well, he won at arm wrestling, and seven children later, I decided maybe I ought to pay more attention to all the advertisements for beautifying aging women. I enthusiastically invested more money than I care to admit on magical serums to make me beautiful. Surprisingly, I still looked like mewhich I decided was just fine.
After earning a Master Herbalist certification, I began to read the labels of all the products that I owned. Wow! That very long, unpronounceable word and chemical was touching my skin? My face? My lips? For years, I decided there was no way to get around it, but on a family vacation, my sister-in-law told me about how washing her face with oil had cleared up her acne. I was shocked and excited! There was a way out of chemicals and overpriced productswhich I never used anyway because they took too much time and I was afraid of running out and having to buy more. Was that hassle logical? No. I became a diligent seeker of a no-chemical life.
Now, in the spirit of full disclosure, I admit that I sometimes lose all of my common sense and purchase a wonderful something guaranteed to keep me young, vibrant, etc. I get caught up in the promises and testimonials, and then the product sits in my drawer, barely used.
My hope for you is that you will use these simple recipes to enhance your natural beauty. Add, mix, and change the recipes as you see fit and according to your individual needs. Learn from your mistakes, as I have (my sister can attest to this), and never be afraid to try something new.

Facial Treatments
Rose Water Spritzer
For this recipe, you may use petals from roses of any color, and they may be wild or cultivated. If you want your rose water to be rose scented, you will need to use roses that have a natural fragrance. Do not mix different types of roses because they have different smells that may not be pleasing when combined. Mixing rose petal colors can also result in off rose water colors.
Fresh rose petals (enough to pack into a jar)
Distilled water
Rinse the rose petals in cold water (sometimes roses have aphids). Pack the petals into a glass mason jar of any size.
Pour just enough distilled water into the mason jar to cover the rose petals. Put a lid on the jar.
Put the mason jar in a saucepan. Fill the pan halfway with tap water. To protect the glass jar from the direct heat at the bottom of the pan, put an upturned quart jar lid at the bottom of the pan, between the pan and the jar. Turn the heat on low and simmer the jar for 20 minutes. Remove from heat.
Strain the liquid from the rose petals using a mesh strainer, reusable straining cloth (available at SeedRenaissance.com), or cheesecloth. If you want your rose water to have a stronger fragrance, proceed to Step 5.
Repeat Steps 14 with fresh rose petals, but use the finished rose water instead of new distilled water each time. The strongest scent is achieved if you reuse the rose water 34 times total. Store the rose water in a lidded container.
Tip: You can also use other flower petals, lemongrass, or other strongly scented herbs to make a spritzer. Explore and have fun creating scents!
Essential Oil Rose Water Spritz
Some people find it more convenient to make their rose water from commercially prepared essential oil instead of gathering rose petals. The good news is that it takes very little oil to make a cup of rose water. Although this recipe is for rose water, you can substitute any essential oil that you want.
