The spirit sports with timecan crowd eternity into an hour, or stretch an hour to eternity.
RALPH WALDO EMERSON (18031882),
AMERICAN AUTHOR/PHILOSOPHER
Following the publication of my books, Constant Craving, and Losing Your Pounds of Pain, many readers said that they were inspired by my ugly-duckling-to-swan transformation story. At one time, I was a fat, uneducated, and extremely unhappy housewife with two small children. I had no income, an unhealthy marriage, and little self-confidence. My only asset was my deep desire to change my life.
A wanted to be a psychologist with a fit body and a harmonious personal life. I also wanted to write self-help books in a house by the beach, but these goals seemed impossible! After all, when would I have time? Besides, the expense of college tuition meant that Id need a job. Family responsibilities already crammed my schedule; when was I supposed to find time to work, attend college, study, and write? And a beach house? What an expensive dream for someone who could barely make the rent each month! I wanted it all, but not at the expense of my family priorities, or my own peace of mind.
As youll read, I fulfilled those and other dreams by using the principles outlined in this book. Today, I have a great life filled with love, family, health, purposeful work, relaxation time, and material comforts.
Like many people, I had to reconcile my personal ambitions with my family concerns. I faced worries such as, Is it selfish to take time away from my family to fulfill my desires?, If I follow my heart, can I pay my bills?, and How can I tell my friends that I need to spend my free time working on my goals, instead of talking on the telephone?
As a lifelong student of religion, philosophy, and metaphysics, I also had spiritual concerns: What if my will differs from Gods will? Is it spiritually correct for me to create goals, or should I wait for signs of divine direction? Am I spiritually shallow to want material comforts?
My goals were never to be filthy rich. I wanted financial security, a nice home, and a safe car. I realized that my material needs were secondary to my need to fulfill my spiritual function by being loving and kind. Still, I wanted some reassurance that if I lived a spiritual life, I wouldnt lose sight of down-to-earth concerns such as paying the electricity or phone bill. Couldnt I be a grounded spiritual seeker?
