de-stress the holiday season! The holidays are a season of great anticipation, filled with family, friends and fun.
Along with the fun, we tend to have lots of things to do, like shopping, socializing, decorating, baking and cooking. It can seem as though there are more things to do than time to do them. We all tend to recycle our habits, even those causing stress. So, change directionstepping away from stress creators and stepping toward stress busters is easier than you think. Here are some suggestions: Didnt deck the house from stem to stern with holiday decorations? Nobody is checking, and no one will even notice. Instead, concentrate on the areas that give you joy, those that will delight you day and night.
Oh, and then there is the food. Ask people to bring something to share, like an appetizer, bread, salad or dessertor all of these! Instead of wrapping all your gifts, use holiday gift bags and colorful tissue paper. The neat thing is that the recipient can reuse the gift bag. For the foods youre providing, mix it up between homemade and store-bought or restaurant favorites. Folks care about the effort overall and being together, not whether your rolls or pies were made from scratch. Have a cookie exchange with six or eight friends or family members.
That way, you need to bake only one kind of cookie, but youll end up with up six or eight different kinds to store and serve. So let go a little, relax, enjoy, revel in the day and feel the stress slip away. Above all, remember that the best holiday gifts are your presence and a smile! cookie baking secrets Have at least 3 or 4 cookie sheets on hand so that as you bake one sheet you can get another one ready to go. Use cookie sheets that are at least 2 inches narrower and shorter than the inside dimensions of your oven so heat circulates around them. Its best to bake only one cookie sheet at a time, using the middle oven rack. If you want to bake two sheets at the same time, put one on the oven rack in the upper third of the oven and one on the oven rack in the lower third.
Remember to switch their positions halfway through the bake time. Check cookies at the minimum bake time. Even 1 minute can make a difference with cookies, especially those high in sugar and fat. The longer cookies bake, the more brown, crisp or hard they become. Always put cookie dough on completely cooled cookie sheets. Cookies spread too much if put on a hot, or even a warm, cookie sheet.
