Introduction
Its not hard to take photos. We all do it, regardless of whether were professional photographers, amateurs, or simply taking a picture to capture a moment in time and look back upon it in the future. And it is so easy to do these days, what with phone cameras at hand, disposable cameras at most stores, and digital cameras at affordable prices. With so many options and such convenience when it comes to photography, why bother spending time learning? A picture is a picture, whether or not its at a professional level quality, right?
Wrong. When it comes to photography, its more than an unnecessary skill set. Photos are windows into our souls, into our lives and memories. Each photo brings back countless emotions and is a snapshot of a moment in time. Looking at a wedding photo brings back fond memories of smiling, dancing, being surrounded by cheering friends, and perhaps crying as you stared into the eyes of the love of your life.
Looking at a picture of an old pet brings back nostalgia for your childhood, remembrance of bright, sunny days when you went to the park to play catch or take a walk, and of grooming soft fur. Photos are important, yet in this age where photography is so convenient that we seem to be taking pictures every minute of our lives to post on social media or just because we can, quality is often overlooked. Or, we strive for high quality pictures, but dont really know what were doing. As long as its not blurry, were satisfied.
But what if you could do more than just avoid blurriness? What if you could really, truly capture an important, memorable moment in your life with a quality that brings tears to your eyes years later rather than the question: Where was this even taken? What if you knew, every single time you took a picture, what angles would be flattering and what lighting would really make colors pop? What if you learned to edit and impressed all of your friends with your mood-setting, perfect photos? Maybe these questions arent things youve thought about, or things you even knew you needed to know to take good pictures.
But these are all very much keys to succeeding at digital photography, and the perks of such success include being able to save money by taking wedding photos for a relative that look just as good as a professionals and being able to frame pictures you took by yourself in your home and be proud of them while getting compliments all the while.
Its not hard to learn digital photography, but its very much necessary. Because once you learn, youll find yourself confident and empowered. Photos wont simply be a random click of a button or a hassle. Theyll be something to enjoy, focus on, and an end product youll be proud of. All you need to do is read this book, which has tips ranging from choosing the right camera for you to taking wedding and food photography to editing photos.
Youll learn what angles are perfect for different situations, what lighting goes best with your picture, and various other techniques. Personally, as someone who seriously picked up the camera a few years ago (and never looked back), Ive found that learning digital photography has opened my eyes to the world. I appreciate nature so much more now, and leaving the house is something I look forward to. Every little thing catches my eye, from an especially vibrant flower with a drop of dew falling from a petal to children laughing and playing on the swings in the local park. I would have never appreciated or even bothered to notice these things before I learned how to take photos professionally, and now I cannot imagine life without such beauty. I know that, with this book, you will be able to learn to appreciate and observe the world around you as well.
You will find that with observation and appreciation comes multiple other benefits, such as less stress, more positivity and happiness, and better health overall. You definitely will not regret improving at digital photography, especially when it will only take you about an hour or so to go through and follow the steps in the chapters.
There are many other things you could choose to do with an hour. You could surf the web, watch a show on television, or take a nap. But instead of spending an hour doing these things, why not set aside just sixty minutes, sit down, and go through this book? Learning digital photography skills is not a waste of time; it is actually far from it. And who knows, maybe you will be inspired to pursue photography as a hobby or even a career. If not, at least you will be inspired to get up and really begin to notice the beauty in the smallest of details and the biggest of moments.
They say that a picture is worth a thousand words. This may sound cheesy, but its true. So go on, read this book, and start your own journey into digital photography. Soon, youll find that the very pictures you take are worth a thousand words and more. Good luck, and have fun!
Chapter 1 - Choosing a Camera
The first stumbling block for beginners in the art of digital photography is choosing the right camera for the task. A lot of the time, the medium youre using is just as important in photography as the technique, no matter how much experience you have. Beyond the simplistic, cameras can be quite complicated, so I will just be focusing on a few basic but solid choices of cameras you can choose between, and their similarities and differences.
However, before I begin talking about certain cameras, you should know a few key terms in digital photography. The two main types of cameras are compact point and shoot cameras and digital SLR (single-lens reflex) cameras.
Once you start searching for a good camera to buy (or if you have started already), you will quickly learn that SLR cameras are much, much more expensive to buy than compact cameras. Beyond buying just the camera, SLR cameras also require additional parts like lenses, flash devices, and other accessories that can quickly rack up the price to be more overall than the camera itself.
There are three main differences between compact cameras and SLR cameras beyond just the price. The first is that SLR cameras have a viewfinder mechanism with a prism/mirror that make the lighting more accurate than the compact camera, meaning that some pictures have the potential of turning out different than what you saw in the compact camera initially.
Second of all, you can change lenses in an SLR camera while compact cameras come with fixed lenses that cannot be changed. This is more cost efficient, but as there is no one size fits all lens, it limits the range of scenes that a compact camera can snap with good image quality.
Finally, compact cameras generally come with much smaller sensors in size than SLR cameras, so that SLR cameras generally capture a larger range of colors from light to dark with a smooth background. However, this isnt good for all cases, such as landscapes in comparison to portraits, so it is necessary to familiarize yourself with the pros and cons of each lens in different situations if you are truly serious about photography. A smaller issue may be that SLR cameras are larger, bulkier, and heavier than compact cameras (hence the name compact), so they are more of a hassle to carry on trips or when attempting to take candid photos in the moment.
I will be focusing on SLR cameras in this book due to the wide range and variety it covers. However, if cost is an issue, I would recommend buying compact cameras from reputable sources such as Nikon, Canon, Panasonic, or Sony, as their cameras are of a better quality generally than a less reputable source. If you are looking at a cheaper source that you are unfamiliar with on a site like Amazon, then make sure that you are completely aware of what you are buying. Make sure that you read the product reviews to see what other customers are saying, as most are likely to be of a similar audience and just learning as well. That way, you will have more of a guarantee of getting a good product that you can use to begin a successful digital photography legacy.
