CONTENTS
Writing a book can often be a long and arduous task. It doesn't have to be. There's no such thing as writer's block when you do it this way.
There are two main advantages with this book writing method. You do it by completing very simple steps and using the conversation method, my recent breakthrough. You'll find it a lot easier and faster. Not only that, you'll produce the kind of book most readers love.
Do you enjoy talking about your favorite subject? Imagine your listener hanging on your every word. They constantly ask questions. All you have to do is provide the answers. Would this make writing your book easier and more enjoyable? Let me tell you that it does. Not only that, it produces better quality work.
Well actually, this is the result a discovery that I've added to previous methods I'd already developed.
It has been a while since I found that writing in easy small chunks is much better than trying to do the whole thing in one go. This is what I recommend.
It's much easier to write about one thing that requires just a few hundred words than a whole book. It's like the difference between having to tidy a small drawer and tidying the whole house.
When you contemplate writing a whole book, the task appears daunting. In fact, this is what stops most from doing it. However, when you realize that it's just a matter of writing small sections, the task is far easier.
Recently, I discovered the conversation method. Essentially, you have a conversation with your reader, inside your head. This technique allows you to always know what to write next. It works like a charm. It also makes the writing process easier and much more enjoyable. It's like sitting down and chatting for hours about your favorite subject. You'll learn about this later on when the time is right.
Here is another major difference to the normal process. You normally create an outline. After you've spent a lot of time on that, you start to write your book. If that's not enough, you now have the long arduous task of editing and proof-reading your whole book.
There are two major problems with doing it this way. Firstly, you spend a lot of time creating an outline before you get down to writing. Secondly, the editing process is a long daunting task. So how is this process better?
With this method, you actually begin to write your book the moment you write the first word in your basic outline. The sentences in your outline become part of your finished book.
There is no long edit. This is done after you complete each small section. Believe me, it's a lot easier to do this with a few hundred words than it is with thousands.
Why did I call this book Write In Steps? Originally, I called it Build It Up. However, someone said that this didn't tell readers that the book was about writing. So I changed the name to what it is now.
The name was chosen because you start with the basics and then build it up in steps. They are each simple to do. When you're done, so is your book. Well, almost. You will be left with the formatting, inserting a table of contents, adding page breaks, and so on. But you have to do that with any book.
Most people complicate the process of writing a book. It's really not that difficult.
Your book is like a body. There are the main parts such as legs, arms, torso, and head. Each of these contain bones that make up the skeleton. On those bones are muscle tissue, sinew, nerves, blood vessels, and skin. (I apologize if I've missed anything out. I'm not a doctor.)
The main topics of your book are like the main parts of the body. Each bone in the skeleton is the key information. They are the main takeaways the reader wants. The muscle tissues, sinews, nerves and blood vessels are the explanations, analogies, examples, etc. Finally, the skin is the packaging, the formatting, chapter headings, pictures, etc.
This is what you do...
You create your book in simple steps. I will now give you an overview of them all. Then in the following sections, I'll explain each one.
Step one
List all the topics you want to talk about. Put each one on a separate page.
Step two
Create a list of everything your reader needs to know.
After that, create a sub-list for each item on your lists. These are the key points and steps your reader needs to know.
You now have topics on separate pages, and lists of all the key information for every one. What you have here is the bare bones of your book. There are no written explanations, examples, or anything else yet. That comes later. This is the raw information. The golden nuggets of your book.
When creating your lists, don't worry about the order. If you do, it will interrupt your flow. Just list everything in whatever order it comes to you. When you have created all your lists, sort them as best you can. I'll go into more detail as we go through the method.
Step three
Go to the first topic and choose the first point or step on the first listed item. You are now going to have an enjoyable conversation with your reader about the first item on your sub-list. You will use a gem of a method to do this. I discovered it by accident. The benefits are that it is enjoyable and you will always know what to say next. That means no writer's block.
Work on one listed item at a time. The next one is only tackled after you've completed all the steps, including the editing.
Step four
Next, include certain important elements that help readers a lot. They will make sure your reader understands everything you say. There are also things that will get your reader to accept and agree with your points of view.
Step five
The next step is to go back and make sure you haven't missed anything. There are two great ways to do this. The first is a tried and trusted method used by journalists. The next is an eye-opening way of uncovering extra things to write about. It's surprising what extra topics this shows up. This is done with a quick scan.
