Chapter One

The fading sound of the traffic from the main road gave way to the rapidly echoing click of her own heels as dusk began to descend. A stroll would have been more suitable for the warm evening, but Paula had left work late and was in a hurry.

Her job as an assistant to an advertising executive was a soul-destroying waste of her business degree. Though she hated it, she made no great effort to seek a new job. Partially because it had taken so long to get that job, her confidence was knocked, and partially because at home she could be a completely different person, which took the sting out of her work situation.

Her alter ego could take control when she got home and, of the two, Scarlet enjoyed herself much more than Paula. Scarlet had the confidence, power and sex appeal Paula lacked. She stopped short of taking off the shirt and skirt she wore, recognising the decision was up to him. After pulling her long glossy brown hair loose from its ponytail and shaking it free, she was ready.

Like her body, her bed was reserved for Joseph, leading her to settle into a chair in the corner with cordless phone in hand. Her skin prickled with anticipation as she dialled the number she knew by heart.

Less than a minute after hanging up the phone, it rang, causing a quiver to shoot up her back.
