ABOUT THE AUTHOR

MARGARET WEBSTER, the daughter of Dame May Whitty and Ben Webster, noted English stage and screen actors, was born in New York in 1905. She played her first role on the stage at the age of eight; her professional debut was in 1924. The year following she appeared in her first Shakespearean production, as a member of the cast of John Barrymores Hamlet. Wide experience with English repertory companies, including the Ben Greet Shakespearean Company and the Old Vic, playing parts in Shakespeare and Shaw, Ibsen and Barrie, Greek tragedy and a variety of other plays, prepared her for the directing career in which her star was to shine brightest. In 1937 she directed the Maurice Evans Richard II, a smash hit on Broadway, which she followed with Henry IV, the uncut Hamlet, Twelfth Night, Macbeth, Othello, The Tempest, Henry VIII, and Richard III, all of which achieved unusual critical acclaim for their imagination and vitality and brought her general recognition as the foremost interpreter of Shakespeare to modern audiences. Her own Shakespeare on Wheels Company, 1948-1950, traveled over 60,000 miles, playing in 44 states and bringing Shakespeare to hundreds of communities which had never seen his plays professionally acted. Her lecture and recital tours brought her into close touch with college and community theaters from coast to coast and earned her honorary degrees from four distinguished colleges. During the fifties and sixties, she continued her active directing career, and branched out into opera, directing numerous productions at the Metropolitan Opera and the New York City Opera. She also returned to acting, touring in The Brontes, a one-woman show. She died in 1972.
