Richard Bessel was born in Springfield, Massachusetts, in 1948 and studied at Antioch College from 1966 to 1970. From 1971 to 1973 he worked for The Current Digest of the Soviet Press , and from 1973 to 1977 he studied at St Peters College, Oxford, taking his DPhil. in 1980. From 1977 to 1979 he was Parkes Library Fellow at the University of Southampton, and since 1979 he has been Lecturer in History at the Open University. He is co-editor (with E. J. Feuchtwanger) of Social Change and Political Development in the Weimar Republic (Croom Helm, 1981) and author of Political Violence and the Rise of Nazism (1984) and Reconstituting German Society: Social Processes of Demobilisation after the First World War (1986).

Richard J. Evans was born in Woodford, Essex in 1947 and studied Modern History at Jesus College, Oxford, graduating in 1969. From 1969 to 1972 he studied at St Antonys College, Oxford, holding a Hanseatic Scholarship from the FVS Foundation in Hamburg and Berlin from 1970 to 1972 and gaining his doctorate in 1972. From 1972 to 1976 he taught at Stirling University, and since 1976 he has been on the faculty of the University of East Anglia, Norwich, becoming Professor of European History in 1983. His latest book, Death in Hamburg: Society and Politics in the Cholera Years 1830-1910 , is to be published in 1987.

Dick Geary was born in Leicester in 1945 and studied History at Kings College, Cambridge, from 1964 to 1970, gaining his doctorate in 1971. From 1970 to 1973 he was a Research Fellow of Emmanuel College, Cambridge, and from 1973 Lecturer at the University of Lancaster, where he is currently Senior Lecturer in German Studies. He is the author of European Labour Protest 1848-1939 (Croom Helm, 1981) and of numerous articles on Marxist theory, the German labour movement, and unemployment in the Weimar Republic. His latest book, Revolution and the German Working Class 1848-1933 , is due to be published in 1987.
