Introduction
The political ideology espoused by bothpolitical parties has been seen throughout the history of thepolitical process throughout the United States of America, and willbe utilized to show the contrasts between the two parties. It is mycontention that the Republican Party of 21st Century America is notthe Republican Party of President Abraham Lincoln, as the ideologyespoused by Abraham Lincoln was progressive for its time and theideology espoused by the 21st Century Republican Party isregressive when compared to the progressive ideology espoused bythe 21st Century Democratic Party. President Abraham Lincoln wouldbe considered a Democrat in this day and age, which is possibly thereason President Ronald Reagan seems to carry more weight withRepublicans in some circles.
A progressive agenda is definitelyrequired, and President Barack Obama and
the Democrats are continuing to push aprogressive agenda inclusive of the least of these, as they lookout for the best interest of poor and middle class Americans whoare struggling financially and Republicans, some of whom claim tobe Christians, are as far away from the tenets of Jesus Christ asthe East is from the West, although some of them claim to followJesus Christ, whos agenda was inclusive of the least of these,as proven in Matthew 25:31-40 which reads as follows:
When the Son of man shall come in hisglory, and all the holy angels with him, then shall he sit upon thethrone of his glory: And before him shall be gathered all nations:and he shall separate them one from another, as a shepherd dividethhis sheep from the goats: And he shall set the sheep on his righthand, but the goats on the left. Then shall the King say unto themon his right hand, Come, ye blessed of my Father, inherit thekingdom prepared for you from the foundation of the world: For Iwas a hungered, and ye gave me meat: I was thirsty, and ye gave medrink: I was a stranger and ye took me in: Naked, and ye clothedme: I was sick, and ye visited me: I was in prison, and ye cameunto me. Then shall the righteous answer him, saying, Lord, whensaw we thee a hungered, and fed thee? or thirsty, and gave theedrink? When saw we thee a stranger and took thee in? or naked andclothed thee? Or when saw we thee sick, or in prison, and came untothee? And the King shall answer and say unto them, Verily I sayunto you, Inasmuch as ye have done it unto one of the least ofthese my brethren, ye have done it unto me. (KJV)
Entitlement programs address a lot ofthe issues addressed by Jesus Christ in these passages ofscripture, as entitlement programs help the poor and middle class, and Republicans, some of whom claim to be Christians, want to cutentitlement programs that help poor and middle class Americans andthey want to give tax cuts to the rich, although Jesus Christ saidwhatever they do to one of the least of these they have done tohim. There are many Americans who need help and fit into thecategory of the least of these, and Republicans are proving bytheir actions the least of these do not matter to them when thepoor and middle class are gauged against the rich.
Merriam Websters dictionary definesentitlement:
Definition 1a: The state or conditionof being entitled. Definition 1b: A right to benefits specifiedespecially by law or contract Definition 2: A government programproviding benefits to members of a specified group; also: fundssupporting or distributed by such a program. Definition 3: Beliefthat one is deserving of or entitled to certainprivileges.
The root word of entitlement is theword entitle. Merriam Websters Dictionary defines entitle:Definition 1: To give a title to: Designate. Definition 2: Tofurnish with proper grounds for seeking or claimingsomething.
This is the root definition behind theword entitlement in the context of entitlement programs, as youhave paid taxes throughout your life which entitles you to utilizeany of these programs you qualify for if you are in need providedyou meet the means test, which are a set of guidelines according toincome levels and family size which are required to be met in orderto receive assistance. You have paid taxes throughout your workinglife that has helped others who were utilizing the programs intheir time of need and if you are in need of help you are entitledto utilize the programs, as you have earned the right along withevery other taxpayer. You are entitled so dont hold your head downbecause of a lie, as some attempt to portray the word entitlementas a bad word which applies to programs for people who aremoochers, and this is a lie that is not true in any shape orform.
Entitlement programs perform thefunction of assisting people who need help while at the same timeadding to the stimulation of the economy. Can you imagine whatshape the United States would be in without entitlement programs?Massive amounts of people would be homeless on the streetsthroughout the country and starving. Many would die from lack ofadequate healthcare as they would have no means of paying for it.Those who are unemployed would lose everything they worked forthrough no fault of their own because they would receive nounemployment compensation, and as a result they would undoubtedlywind up in the numbers of those homeless throughout the country andthis would definitely cut into the economy at all angles as aneconomic stimulator would be cut off. Only the privileged few wouldhave the ability to receive an education and many would be left outof the equation as they would have no means of paying forit.
If social security did not existmassive amounts of senior citizens would be included in the numbersof those homeless and starving throughout the United States, asmany senior citizens rely on their social security income to makeit and without it they would be in definite need of help. Seniorcitizens stimulate the economy when they spend their socialsecurity money as they buy groceries and pay bills, which stimulatethe economy as these businesses receive the social security moneythat is spent with them. It enables them to pay salaries toemployees, who in turn spend their money with businesses, enablingthem to pay salaries to employees and so on and so forth.Entitlement programs are directly and indirectly linked to theeconomy and businesses benefit from entitlement programs, which ifcut, would affect businesses through the loss of entitlementprogram money that is normally spent with thesebusinesses.
