With the debate about Europe constantly in the headlines, this examination of the important and tricky post-war relationship between German and Britain compares their different roles, outlook and development. In the wake of a devastated continent, this relationship has been one of the central axes of the development of post-war Europe and crucial in terms of recent British history. Sabine Lee considers broad issues such as the comparative senses of national identity, destiny and direction, and the respective roles of Germany and Britain in Europe and in the world community at large. With Germany now reunited and at the head of the new Europe, and Britain in the process of devolution and struggling to retain the special relationship with the United States, this is an important and topical book.

BritishGerman relations have played an important part in my personal and professional life during the last two decades. Living in Great Britain as a German and teaching European history to students at an English university all helped to shape my views on many of the issues discussed in this volume. Naturally many of my insights into BritishGerman affairs past and present are the result of discussions with colleagues, students and friends. I am particularly grateful to David Reynolds, who not only encouraged me to write this book in the first place, but who read and commented on the text and offered much helpful advice at various stages of its composition. Sincere thanks also to Sir Oliver Wright whose insights in all things British, German and European have been a great asset. Although we had to agree to disagree on some aspects of the interpretation his comments were greatly appreciated.
Staff in many libraries and archives have helped me in my research. I would like to thank the staff of Cambridge University Library; Birmingham University Library (or Information Services as it is known to students of the 21st century); the Public Record Office, London; the Archiv fur Christlich Demokratische Politik, St. Augustin; the Bundesarchiv, Koblenz and Freiburg; the Archiv der Ludwig-Erhard-Stiftung, Bonn; and the Archiv des Auswartigen Amtes, Bonn. Crown Copyright Documents at the PRO are quoted by permission of the Controller of HM Stationary Office.
Combining academic and family life is a challenge at the best of times even without publishers' deadlines and proof-reading or indexing of manuscripts. It is largely due to the patience and understanding of Han, Katharina and Sebastian, that this book did not just remain an idea but became reality. Thank you.
