Ferguson up to the contemporary period, this encyclopedia traces the transition from the Reconstruction Era to the age of Jim Crow, the Harlem Renaissance, the Great Migration, the Brown ruling that overturned Plessy, the Civil Rights Movement, and the ascendant influence of African American culture on the American cultural landscape. Covering African American history in all areas of U.S. history and culture from 1896 to the present, the Encyclopedia contains approximately 1,200 fully cross-referenced entries that are all signed by leading scholars and experts, making this five-volume set the most reliable and extensive treatment to be found on African American history in the twentieth century. The set also contains 500 images and roughly 640 biographies, as well as an entry on each of the fifty states. In addition to its comprehensive coverage of African Americans, the Encyclopedia also contains entries about key figures who affected the lives of African Americans in particular and Americans in general. Unrivalled in breadth and scope, this is the preeminent source of information on this topic and is destined to become a trusted reference source for years to come.;Volume 5: -- Union Of Soviet One

Theodore Maxmillian Middleton stared at the strangerlying in his bed and knew there wasnt enough drink in the world tomake this situation bearable. Hed kill his brother for this.Tomorrow. Right now, he needed to focus on what the hell he wasgoing to do about her.

Bloody hell. What was he going to do about her?

She stared back at him, stark white and wide-eyed.Good God, she was shaking. He felt like a cad and he hadnt so muchas touched her.

Lady He couldnt remember herfirst name. Hed never felt like such a fool. Fairchild, we donthave to do this tonight.

There it was. That little chin popped up just enoughso that she vaguely resembled the chit hed met more than handfulof times in his lifetime, but didnt know the first thingabout.

Its Lady Middleton now, thoughperhaps its best if you call me by my Christian name at thispoint.

Did he even know her Christian name? Best tojust brush right past that, hed figure it out tomorrow. Ofcourse. As I was saying

Its Juliette. As in, I take thee, Juliette GraceFairchild She waved her hand as if tosay etcetera. You should jot it down somewhere in case you are inneed of it again.

Excellent. Married twelve hours and she was alreadysniping at him. Tomorrow, when he killed his brother, it would beslow and unnecessarily painful. Yes, well, its probably recordedin the family Bible now; Ill just look it up the next time.

Juliette crossed her arms in what appeared to bedisdain. She likely didnt realize she framed her bosom to him inthat position. Oddly, in all the chaos of the last twelve hours, hehadnt noticed how ample that bosom was. He didnt think he shouldbe noticing now. But there it was, encased in a sheath of whitelinen, taunting him.

His but not his.

Granted, she was his wife, this was their weddingnight, and she was in his bed. However, they were virtualstrangers. Their marriage was a farce, though, unfortunately, alegal one. Hed assumed that shed prefer to have her own chambers, and God knows there were enough of them in this house.

I thought you might wish to waitto practice marital relations. Theres no rush. There. Wasnt he afine man? How many new husbands were so understanding?

Id like to get it over with,Lord I mean, Teddy.

Come again? He couldnt see it, but he could swear shed just hurled abrick at his chest. All the air expelled from his lungs with thecrush of it. Over with? he repeated.

With as few theatrics aspossible. Ive had quite enough of them this day.

Theatrics?

She nodded her prim little head, the curtain ofblonde bouncing with the movement. Neither of us is lookingforward to it, but putting off the inevitable wont help. Letsjust dispense with the awkward deed and hope for the best. I cantbear the thought of dreading it every day until its done, so ifyou dont mind, Id like for you to begin now.

Now? Youd like me to beginnow?

For Heavens sake, are you goingto repeat everything I say as a question?

Teddy considered himself a fine man with moralcharacter and plenty of mostly virtuous qualities. Hed donenothing to warrant this mess except follow the dictates of a duke, which he was honor bound to do. That the duke was also his brotherand belonged in Bedlam did not change the fact that Teddy hadlittle choice in the matter.

But his patience had reached its limit.

He shrugged off his overcoat and began undoing hiscravat. No, I shant question you any longer. Youre absolutelyright, lets rid you of your virginity and put this whole messbehind us. He pulled his shirt from his breeches. Well, what areyou waiting for? Get naked.

* * *

Juliette gasped. Not just at his vulgar words, but atall the skin he revealed when he threw his shirt to the floor. Getnaked? she asked.

Teddy smiled; the wicked grin prompted the return ofthe dimple shed noticed earlier and caused her to suck in moreair. The divot added a boyish charm to his usually serious face, but did nothing to erase the rakish expression of intent. How wasit possible for him to look at once a dangerous man as well as animpish boy?

She tried to keep her gaze locked on that dimple, butshe couldnt help but let it roam briefly to the expanse of hisnaked chest. Goodness. Shed never seen a nearly naked man before. He was beautiful.

She berated herself for that. Men were not beautiful.Men were irresponsible little boys with all the power and reallygloriously tapered waists. Stop it! She squeezed her eyes shut. Nowwas not the time to let her mind wander. Her husband was about toclaim her virginity. And he was doing it all wrong.

His hands lowered to his breeches.

Wait, please, sheimplored.

Teddy stilled his hands. I thought we were in ahurry to divest ourselves of your maidenhead.

The shock of his language drained the blood from herface. There is no need to be so uncivilized. Please snuff thecandles. And Id like tostay dressed.

He exhaled a curse and sat on the edge of the bed.Are you aware of how a man and a womanthat is to sayyouunderstand that well behells bells, this is coming out allwrong.

Juliette wished hed show some decency and coverhimself. The way the light in the room attached itself to him wasshameless. What did he do to develop those well-defined shoulders? The few times shed met Teddy, hed been buried in a book, barelylooking up to acknowledge her presence.

Dont trouble yourself toexplain. I know what I need to know. And I am quite certain that mygown neednt come completely off during for this it to besuccessful.

He scraped a hand through his hair, disheveling itand adding to his roguish appearance. And his boyish one. ForGods sake, Juliette, were about to make love, not attend afuneral.

Please, its how I wish it. Hervoice sounded small. Perhaps that is why he acquiesced on amasculine sigh and crossed the room, snuffing out all the lightsave the fire in the grate.

Juliette slid down the mattressand pulled the covers to her chin. She recounted figures in herhead to ease her nerves. Think aboutgrain . If the price of grain went anylower, they would have to sellher heart seized as Teddy slid intobed next to her. She tried to breathe normally, show no fear, butthen he was leaning over her kissing her hair, hercheek.

You have glorious hair, hewhispered into her ear. Like golden silk. The sensation startledher. She felt as if she were a being tightened from the inside out,and that something was going to have to happen to loosen her tonormal.

Shes fairly certain she squeaked.

Relax, he murmured, kissing herjaw. All will be well.

She didnt believe him. This shame was not to beborne. Her brother caused this mess. She thought it better to goalong with the farce than to bear the stigma of creating a publicscandal, but now she had second thoughts. Juliette swallowed hardwhen Teddy kissed her neck. Something that felt like longing pulledat her heart. How long had she wished someone would tell her allwill be well, and then actually make it so? How many years had shebeen holding everything together on her own, wishing she hadsomeone to share the burden with?
