the BUZZ
WICKEDLYFUNNY and ICONOCLASTIC. This is no litany of
Zen orthodoxy designed for study. ENTERTAINING, bold and
REFRESHINGLYDIRECT, this book is likely to change the way
one experiences other books about Zenand maybe even
the way one experiences reality.

About.com

WARNER IS ONE OF US. When he talks about Zen,
its with a bluntness and ACIDIC SENSE OF HUMOR
that belongs to us as well. Most importantly,
he presents it in honest, DOWN-TO-EARTH
language that shows how these ideas connect
to our immediate lives
Maximumrocknroll

Capable of DEVASTATING HUMOR; Warner
PULLS NO PUNCHES. His book is an honest
account of his search for TRUTH.

You NEED to READ THIS BOOK.

MAN OH MAN, this is a VERY GOOD book.

the AUTHOR
BRAD WARNER was a kid from the town of WADSWORTH, OHIO, who managed to get himself to the CUTTING EDGE of the HARDCORE PUNK scene in the early 80s. He played bass for ZERO DEFEX, one of the noisiest of the hardcore punk bands, and recorded five albums under the band name DIMENTIA 13. He eventually found himself in Japan, working on low-budget GODZILLA-TYPE MOVIES and ULTRAMAN television shows, all the while studying with a ZEN MASTER. Now that same hardcore punk is also a Zen priest. But hes NOT ABOUT TO SAY THAT HIS PUNK DAYS ARE OVER now that hes seen the lightfar from it. Warners equally at home in a LOUD BASEMENT CLUB or a REMOTE ZEN TEMPLE. When not at his day job, Brad Warner teaches HARDCORE ZEN in lectures and meditation retreats.

This is ZEN FOR THE SOUTH PARK SET: SUBVERSIVE,
shit-stick dharma liberally laced with scenes
from Warners life [which ] will no doubt RESONATE.
Hardcore Zen is Be Here Now for now.
Tricycle: The Buddhist Review

Readers are likely to finish Hardcore Zen
with a wider understanding of the
VAST ARRAY OF HUMAN SPIRITUAL IDEALS.
Foreword

DOWN-TO-EARTH and FUNNY. Its rare to encounter
someone who can claim authority on such a
wide variety of the USELESS and PROFOUND, but
Warner has the rsum to back it up. He sees
Buddhism as a TRUTH-SEEKING METHOD, a means of
CONFRONTING REALITY. Hardcore Zen will probably
make you reconsider how you spend your time.
CityBeat

A FASCINATING AND REAL look at the authors journey
from small-town punk to Zen master/punk.
An interesting read for anyone with a burning
need to examine and find peace with the
nature of life.

FINALLY, a Dharma book with BALLS!
Reverend Kevin Kobutsu Malone

Hardcore Zen DEFTLY LINKS punk idealism,
POP CULTURE and a SPIRITUAL QUEST in a way
that seems at once surprising and obvious. This
is the SOUND OF ONE HAND THRASHING!
David Giffels & Jade Dillinger, authors of

and still MORE buzz
Ive always had an interest in Eastern thought but
was put off by the placid lake-and-lotus
blossom tone of everything Id read. Its nice to
know that PUNK ROCK AND ZEN ARENT IRRECONCILABLE AFTER ALL.
Jeff Hagedorn, Owned & Operated Recordings

A conversational tone and endless streams of pop
references to EVERYTHING FROM MINOR THREAT TO THE MATRIX
make this a READABLE and FUN book. Warners
idea of questioning is particularly striking.
Not just questioning authority, but friends,
oneself, and, yes, him.
School Library Journal

Its nice to read something that actually makes
you think and laughthere were times I LAUGHED SO HARD I
COULDNT BREATHE. This book KICKS ASS. Damn good job.
Jennifer Martin, The Book Merchant
(Natchitoches, Louisiana)

This is, BY FAR, THE BEST BOOK I have read on Buddhism
in the last decade. If you only read one book this
spring, let it be Hardcore Zen.
Still Point Newsletter

I never thought that any book could fit in
Klaus Nomi, Ultraman and a description of a
practical theology but Brad Warner has done it.
Its A GREAT F***ING BOOK, read it and then do
as the BAD BRAINS commanded us and DESTROY BABYLON.

PROLOGUE
For me it was this: Turning away from an overflowing toilet in a crummy basement bar in the middle of an Ohio winter with a bunch of apes in leather jackets outside shouting in unison as some other ape in a pair of stretch-pants thrashes away at an imitation Les Paul guitar running through a busted Marshall amp. The lights, the noise, the girl by the bar in the sweaty white T-shirt that I can just about see through All of a sudden Im struck with the senselessness, the absurdity, the sheer overwhelming weirdness of it all.
What is this place? This existencethe very fact of my beingwhat is this? Who am I? What is this thing, this body, its ears ringing from the noise, its eyes burning from the smoke, its stomach churning from the pissy-tasting swill that passes for beer?

IT ALL CAME TO A HEAD that night but those have always been the kinds of burning questions that bit into the core of my being since I was old enough to think. Not questions like, What is the purpose of existence? What is the meaning of life? Where did we come from?those were always too indirect for me. Meaning is removed from real existence. Purpose deals with goals, direction, and stuff thats going to happen in the future. Wherever we came from is over and done. That doesnt get at it for me. It doesnt get right at the root of things. I want to know what this isthis place right here, this state of mind right now. What is this?
*Id like to mention, for the benefit of the good folks at that record label that Im still waiting for my royalties.
Or to put it another way: What is truth itself? What is this thing called reality?

NOW, AFTER YEARS AND YEARS of intense questioning I feel like I have something to sayand more than that, I feel I almost have a duty to say it.
Why should you listen to me? Who the hell am I? Who is this guy whos claiming hes gonna give you the skinny on the truth about reality as if hes an authority? No one. No one at all.
The fact is, although I can tell you who I am and what Ive done, I cant give you any real reasons why you ought to listen to me. There arent any reasons. Its not about reasons.
