Evangelism and the Sovereignty of God: summary, description and annotation

We offer to read an annotation, description, summary or preface (depends on what the author of the book "Evangelism and the Sovereignty of God" wrote himself). If you haven't found the necessary information about the book — write in the comments, we will try to find it.

If God is in control of everything, can Christians sit back and not bother to evangelize? Or does active evangelism imply that God is not really sovereign at all? J. I. Packer shows in this new edition to the popular IVP Classics how both of these attitudes are false. In a careful review of the biblical evidence, he shows how a right understanding of Gods sovereignty is not so much a barrier to evangelism as an incentive and powerful support for it. With over 100,000 copies in print, Evangelism and the Sovereignty of God is truly a classic that should be read by every Christian.

the 1959 reprint of The Death of Death in the Death of Christ by John Owen. Owens book is a classical discussion of the complex questions that the controversy about limited atonement involves. The central issue does not concern the value of the atonement, considered in itself, nor the availability of Christ to those who would trust him as their Savior. All agree that no limit can be set to the intrinsic worth of Christs death, and that Christ never casts out those who come to him. The cleavage is over the question, whether the intention of the Father and the Son in the great transaction of Calvary was to save any more than actually are saved. There is no room here to open up this elaborate question; and in any case, nothing in the text depends one way or the other on the answer that one gives to it.

Foreword

B efore J. I. Packer became an evangelical superstar with the publication of Knowing God in 1973, he had already made important contributions to evangelical readers. Packer had a knack for addressing key topics succinctly and powerfully. What others would do in long and ponderous tomes, Packer would address, fairly and squarely, with a little volume of three or four chapters. The clarion call for God-centeredness, long before John Pipers Desiring God or even Packers own Knowing God, was Packers little introduction for the republication of John Owens The Death of Death in the Death of Christ. The loss of faith in Scripture he met with the little volume Fundamentalism and the Word of God . And, in July of 1961 appeared the book you now hold in your hands Evangelism and the Sovereignty of God .
