M edia has been both the bane and boon of our times. While its positive side cannot be overlooked, its pervasive nature can be a little too suffocating and overwhelming at times. How often have you heard stories about how you should look, how you should eat, how you should dress and how you should live your lives?! It can destroy your self-confidence, turn your attention to irrelevant and mundane things (seriously, who cares if you do not look like the model on the cover of the latest sports magazine?) and most importantly, detract from the quality of your life your precious life that you will only get to live once. It is imperative that you realize that blindly following everything you read, hear or see will make you lose sight of the most important things in life.
Mark Masons The Subtle Art of Not Giving a Fuck addresses this issue by highlighting the truly significant things in life. Your secret to living the good life is in your hands and your hands only. The book enunciates how not to give a fuck and how incorporating this simple mantra will bring about mind-blowing changes in your day-to-day life. Furthermore, the book also delves into what happiness is, and goes at lengths to explain how not giving a fuck is an integral part of true happiness. The book also goes against the grain in that it talks about how emotions are overrated, and why even negativity is something to be embraced given that its merely a normal and indispensable part of human life.
The book is presented in a clear, simple and easy to understand manner. It is divided as follows into 9 chapters. Let us briefly go through them as follows:
Chapter 1: Dont try
This chapter will dissuade you from trying to attain perfection. There is no need for you to be perfect, at least not in the way social media tends to portray it to be. Perhaps the most important thing that you will learn from this chapter is that indifference and not giving a fuck are two entirely different things.
Chapter 2: Happiness is a Problem
If you have ever had to explain to people about how pain does not always have to be physical, then you will really relate to this chapter. This chapter details how happiness comes from solving problems and how humans tend to create new problems by trying to solve an existing problem. The most pertinent part of the chapter, perhaps, is the part about how overrated emotions are.
Chapter 3: You are not special
The name itself should give you an inking as to what the chapter is about. Essentially, it obliterates the concept of entitlement. The chapter articulates how your life has meaning even if you are not special or extraordinary.
Chapter 4: The value of suffering
Suffering does not always have a negative connotation. In many ways, it helps you grow and become stronger. This chapter teaches you what values are worth suffering for. Have you ever heard of the quote everything and everyone will hurt you in the end, you just need to find what and who is worth suffering for. Well, think of this chapter as one that illustrates that.
Chapter 5: You are always choosing
This chapter talks about how choices affect your life. To throw in a Harry Potter reference (apologies to those not familiar), Dumbledore famously tells Harry in an iconic scene this: Harry, it is our choices that show us what we truly are far more than our abilities. In a nutshell, this chapter is about that, about the importance of choices; in joy or sorrow, in victory or defeat, you have the remote control; you can choose your course of action. Do you want to play the victim card? If not, how do you avoid doing it? You will find all your answers in this chapter.
Chapter 6: Youre wrong about everything (But so am I)
This chapter talks about the imperfect nature of your brain and why you cannot always take it at face value. There is also an enlightening part about how doubt may not be such a bad thing and how you can be a little less certain of yourself.
Chapter 7: Failure is the way forward
In the field of sports, it is commonly stated that losses teach you far more than wins do. Chapter 7 shows you why this theory is on the money. Failures are obstacles only if you let them be. If you can maintain a positive outlook despite failures, then your quality of living will improve appreciably.
Chapter 8: The importance of saying no
If you think rejection cannot go hand-in-hand with the betterment of your life, then think again! This chapter highlights this point in detail, and it also enunciates the importance of setting, maintaining and respecting boundaries. Furthermore, you will learn about how you can build trust, strengthen relationships and experience freedom through commitment.
Chapter 9: ...And then you die
It is rather fitting that this is the final chapter. It will bring you back to earth by reiterating the mortal nature of human life. You may look like Brad Pitt or Angelina Jolie, bend it like Beckham, or move like Shakira. It is all insignificant in the grander scheme of things though, as you will still die. This chapter is definitely one of the most important ones in the entire book as it reiterates the fact that time on earth is limited and how it is imperative that you make the most of it without any outside influence.
All said and done, the perfect life does not exist. Therefore, there is absolutely no point staying worried, depressed or stressed striving for one. You may have all the material riches the world has to offer, but you will still feel incomplete if you give too many fucks about achieving success in the way society has defined success.
Society plays far too pervasive a role in your day-to-day life, and the sad part is that you may not even realize it. Society, directly or indirectly, dictates how you should look, what career options you should take, what your grades at school or college should be, how much you should earn for a good life, which car you should be driving, what age you should marry at, what color of shirt you should wear, etc. etc. etc. This is not to say that some of these things are not important, they certainly are. Here is the keypoint, though: it is not the societys place to tell you this! Social media for all the good that it does is notorious for making people feel ashamed with regard to their shape, size, salary...the list goes on and on. Just Google what a menace internet bullying, fat shaming and the kind have become and how many gullible and sensitive souls have fallen prey, going to the extent of ending their lives. It is just so sad and unfortunate, words are not enough.
