Ever since her early days at the Findhorn Community in Scotland, Dorothy Maclean has been helping people attune to nature and connect with their inner divinity. Now, in Choices of Love, she discusses the nature of divine love and how each of us can avail ourselves of its power to enrich any aspect of our lives. The immensity of divine love, how to contact it, the nature of the Divine, blocks to understanding, the nature of good and evil, and the angelic world of nature and of human groupings such as cities, states, and nations, are among the topics Dorothy Maclean addresses. Choices of Love will leave you with a clearer understanding of yourself and of the universal love in which we all participate.

Introduction

MY BOOK To Hear the Angels Sing, written more than fifteen years ago, gives my perspective on the early days of the Findhorn Foundation. It tells how a community developed out of the commitment of three peopleEileen and Peter Caddy and meto do what we called God's will. Each of us had experiences of the sacred and attempted to live according to inner guidance. We did not intend to start a community. It grew out of the development of the garden, and the garden grew out of the development of our cooperation with the inner essence of nature. The nature aspect was my particular contribution, leading to my experiencing the essence of not only the plant kingdom but of minerals, animals, and groups of human beings as well.

We found that inner contact was relevant at all levels of our lives, and the brilliant and unusual garden growth was the practical evidence. Speaking for myself, when I followed constant inner reminders to do everything with love, I felt better, things worked out, relationships with others improved. I have experienced many examples of the practicality of choosing love or connecting with the soul level and of how the results of these choices changed my life. For instance, I used to hate to live in cities, but I changed into a person who no longer has any problem in this respect, and that alone has had a huge influence on my life. It was contact with the angel of a city that made the difference in me.

CHOICES OF LOVE

In talking about God, which to me is the life force within everything, I use various words such as the Beloved, the sacred, wholeness, oneness, love, the presence. The dimensions of soul, the part of us and of everything that is closest in consciousness to inner divinity, I simply call the soul or angelic level. In these dimensions are the energies, the formless force fields that I name angels or devas. To me, the soul of anything, say a country, is basically the same as its aWgel. At the same time, everything that is external, being part of God, is also sacred.

Part one of the book deals with my connection to the sacred. All the wonderful experiences that have clarified my being have stemmed from "listening" to my inner knowing, to God the Beloved. Through the years I have found that people are open to finding enlightenment from many outer sources or from out-of-this-world sources, such as guides or space beings, but somehow they are not as open to seeking their inner wisdom. Our religious backgrounds have blocked our minds from gaining access to the one source that is behind all life. So I have started by delving more deeply into the marvelous care and training that I have received and that all of us receive when we turn to that source. For years I chose to begin the day by attuning to and wrapping myself in that great love that is at the core of us all. Gradually, through the years, my very personality became more loving, more amenable. I was learning from within that all situations are helped by love, that following such inward requests from God as "Wash the dishes with me" made my work and myself much more efficient and enjoyable. Then, when asked by God to attune to the essence of nature, I discovered other aspects of the wondrous life on this planet and realized that angels are the expression of and agents for creation that the Beloved works through.

Introduction

Like most of us, I am interested in the question of good and evil. When I communicated with angels of qualities like serenity, I found them to be above polarity; the Angel of Joy and the Angel of Sorrow were one and the same angel. This knowledge helped direct me to explore the subject of evil more fully, and chapter two describes my searchings. Contact with the angels also revealed that soul qualities are intelligent energies in themselves and that each of them is an aspect of love. Through them I was led to understand a little of the creative process on Earth and the parts played by the four elements. These subjects may seem somewhat abstract, yet understanding them has been illuminating and helpful in my everyday life.

In part two, I share experiences resulting from soul contact with various parts of creation. The emphasis is on how we connect with other life on the planet and how we can use our creativity for the whole. As we link with different aspects of ourselves and the planet, we change ourselves and the planet. We have the capability of consciously connecting and cooperating with all life species. We can even consciously connect and cooperate with the souls of such human groups as cities and countries. It was through my connection with the soul of my native country of Canada that I recognized and began to free myself from the cultural biases that not only separated me from others but also caused me to act unconsciously. At the same time accepting and honoring my background was an essential basis for understanding my identity. Other experiences taught me more about the psychic level of consciousness and our ability to connect with and heal the mental and emotional projections we have created.

Often people have said to me that they can't communicate with God or with angels, or have asked me how to know what they are connecting with. One answer is that whether we are

conscious of it or not, we are always attuning to these energies, for our core is a divine spark and our soul functions in the same realm as the angels. We have angelic qualities. If we had no connection with divinity, we would not be alive. However, most of us do not tend to feel very angelic or even want to! We have a divine essence, and we might as well admit it and live with it, for it is not going to go away. When we feel elements of wholeness, lightness, uplift, nonjudgment, or joy, we know we are in contact with the sacred. Conversely, if in our attunement we feel criticism, condemnation, or blame, we can know we are connecting to personal beliefs or prejudices that divide us from others.

A state of meditation is one way to make the inner connection, as suggested in the exercises given at the end of each chapter. Meditation can be the start of a deep communication and sharing with many realms within ourselves and others, and an aid to becoming more loving.
