When you talk about wanting to lose weight, there are a few images that might just naturally pop into your mind. You might picture someone hopping on a treadmill or someone joining a Zumba class. You imagine people going on hikes or long walks to sweat it out. Somehow, you know that these cardiovascular activities can help induce weight loss and make you healthier. But it goes so much deeper than that. There are so many other layers and dimensions to cardio that you might not be familiar with.

You might have already tried establishing some kind of relationship with cardio training in the past. Maybe you were motivated by a New Years Resolution to get started on running more frequently. However, after a couple of runs, you decide to give up and fall back into your old ways. Dont worry. If this is true for you, then its nothing to be ashamed of. It happens to a lot of people. And the reason that this keeps on happening is that people tend to approach cardiovascular training in the wrong way.

For one not many people really grasp or understand the many nuances of cardio - photo 2

For one, not many people really grasp or understand the many nuances of cardio training. Think of your relationship with cardio as a relationship to a romantic partner. There is no way that you would be able to enjoy your romantic relationship if you dont take the time to get to know your partner better. You would never be able to sustain the relationship you have with one another if youre just keeping things at surface level. Its the same with cardio training. In order for you to truly appreciate what its doing for your body, you need to develop a more profound understanding of what cardio really is.

On top of that you also have to make sure you arent just tackling cardio - photo 3

On top of that, you also have to make sure you arent just tackling cardio training robotically. When cardio starts to feel like its a chore, it can be very hard to sustain. Its so difficult having to find the drive and motivation to stick to a training plan every single day. Although, when you make certain tweaks to your approach to training, its going to be a lot easier than you think.

Ultimately, there is a lot to be gained from having a set and structured cardiovascular training routine. All of the incentives are there. The extrinsic motivations are ever present. Its just a matter of building up your intrinsic motivation by developing a better understanding and relationship with cardiovascular training. So, with that, lets dive right into the thick of things, shall we?

Chapter 1: The Benefits of Cardiovascular Training

First, it might be prudent to define what cardiovascular training really is. If youre just getting started on an exercise program, youre bound to hear the word cardio get thrown around out there a lot. When you enroll at a gym, you might hear your instructor tell you that you need to do some cardio first.

But what exactly is cardio? Well, to put it simply, cardio is the act of doing and sustaining some form of vigorous physical activity to the point wherein you elevate your heart rate over a set period of time. Typically, even just sustaining 10 minutes of a certain activity with an elevated heart rate can already qualify as cardiovascular activity. However, its recommended that you do cardio for at least 30 minutes around three to five times a week. We will get deeper into the different forms of cardio training later on. For now, all you need to know is that there is a lot to gain from engaging in regular cardio activity. Here are some of the benefits:

It Helps Use up Calories and Burn Fat

This is probably the most well-known benefit of doing cardio It also happens - photo 4

This is probably the most well-known benefit of doing cardio. It also happens to be one of the most popular motivators for a lot of people to start doing cardio in the first place. Be honest about it. Very few people ever say that they want to do cardio because theyre just bored and looking for something to do. A lot of the time, people sign up to a gym or take on a new training program as the result of wanting to get leaner and fitter.

When you do cardiovascular activity, you are burning up calories in your body. Calories are units of measure for energy. You get the energy from the food you eat. People get fat as the result of having leftover calories that are underutilized by the body. These calories are then converted into stored fats. However, if you are doing cardio, you end up using these calories to make sure that none of them get stored as fat in your body.

On top of that, when your body runs out of calories to use up, it then has to resort to the stored fats in your body to use as energy. So, when doing cardio, you burn the food that you eat and the stored fat thats already in your body.
