Chapter 1
What AreAnxiety Disorders and Phobias

Anxietyis often a term used for a number of disorders that cause people to feelnervous, fearful, apprehensive or worried. Not only can these disordersaffect the way we feel but also the way in which we behave and there is a riskof them manifesting into actual physical symptoms.

Thosewho suffer from mild forms of anxiety or phobias will feel unsettled. Whereasthose who suffer from more severe forms of these disorders can find that theyare very debilitating and will impact very severely on their lives on a dailybasis.

Mostpeople will experience some form of worry or fear when they are faced withsomething new or something challenging such as a test or an interview. Not onlycan these feelings be easily justified they are also considered to be quitenormal. Anxiety or phobias only become a problem when the symptoms associatedwith them start to interfere with a persons life. Generally anxiety will occurwhen the reaction someone has to something is completely out of proportion withwhat is normal during a certain situation.

Suchconditions can be classified into several different types and below we brieflytake a look at what these are.

Type1 GAD (Generalized Anxiety Disorder)

Thisparticular form of anxiety disorder is characterized by excessive as well aslong lasting anxiety or worry relating to non specific events, objects orsituations in a persons life. Those who suffer from this particular anxietydisorder will often feel afraid about matters such as money, health, family, work or school. However these people not only have trouble identifying what iscausing their fear but also finding ways of controlling it. The fear they arefeeling usually is unrealistic or completely out of proportion with what isconsidered normal during certain situations.

Insome cases the amount of failure or disaster they expect can seriouslyinterfere with how such people function on a daily basis.

Type2 Panic Disorder

Thisform of anxiety is characterized by a person suffering from brief or suddenattacks of intense terror or apprehension during a particular situation. Theywill suffer symptoms such as shaking, dizziness, nausea and problems breathingas well as feeling confused. Normally attacks associated with this conditionappear suddenly and will often die away after around 10 minutes, but in moresevere cases these attacks could continue for several hours.

Mostpanic attacks will take place after someone has experienced something extremelyfrightening or where they have been placed under a great amount of stress forany length of time. During such attacks the sufferer may find themselvesbecoming very aware of changes in the way in which their body functions and mayfeel that they are suffering from an illness that is life threatening.

Type3 Phobias

Whena person suffers from any form of phobia it causes an irrational fear in thatperson and they try to avoid certain situations or objects to ensure that theproblem doesnt become any worse. This type of condition is different from GADas a person has a fear response that is related to something specific.

Eventhough the fear the person is feeling is known to be irrational or unnecessarythe person suffering from this condition still finds it difficult to controlthe anxiety. What stimulates a person to suffer from this condition is veryvaried and relate to not only specific situations or to specific animals or objects. Most people who suffer from such an illness will choose to ensure that theyarent faced by the things that cause them to be afraid for no real reason.

Type4 Social Anxiety Disorder

Thistype of phobia is one that people suffer from who are afraid of being judgednegatively by others or who are scared of embarrassing themselves publiclybecause of actions that they cannot prevent themselves from doing. In mostcases people who suffer from this type of phobia tend to avoid being aroundothers so that they dont have to face the problems associated with it.

Type5 OCD (Obsessive Compulsive Disorder)

Peoplewho suffer from this particular order are characterized by certain actions orthoughts that not only do they repeat time and time again, but also prove to bevery distressing and intrusive. Most people who suffer from this conditionusually know that what they are doing is unreasonable and irrational but willcontinue to do them as they help to provide relief from the anxiety that theyare feeling.

Type6 PTSD (Post Traumatic Stress Disorder)

Thistype of condition often develops as a result of some previous trauma. In recentyears this disorder has been connected with those who have been involved inmilitary combat, who have been taken as hostages or have been involved in aserious accident or serious crime. Most sufferers of this condition will notonly suffer from flashbacks relating to the trauma but also will start tobehave in different ways to ensure that stimulus isnt provided to cause suchto occur.

Type7 Separation Anxiety Disorder

Peoplewho suffer from this condition will become very anxious when they becomeseparated from a particular person or place that makes them feel secure andsafe. In some cases the anxiety can be so severe that it results in the personsuffering panic attacks.

Chapter 2
What CausesAnxiety Disorders and Phobias

Suchconditions may be as a result of environmental or medical factors as well asgenetics, an imbalance in the chemicals in the brain or through substanceabuse. Also it may be a combination of the above factors mentioned. Generallyfeelings associated with anxiety disorders and phobias are triggered by stressin our lives. Normally these feelings are a response to outside forces; howeverit is possible that we can also make ourselves feel anxious through negativeself-talk. This is the habit where we are always telling ourselves thatsomething really bad is going to happen.

Thereare many different things that can cause one to suffer from such conditions.Only when one knows what is the underlying cause of the problem can the rightsort of treatment then be provided. Also understanding what is causing one tosuffer from anxiety disorders or phobias can help one to decide what type ofself-help techniques can be used to help manage the condition better.
