As long as humankind has existed, so has the practice of healing. Oral and recorded histories tell us that the earliest human beings prayed to their deities to keep them well, and they even made sacrifices in order to ward off the evil that was thought to enter the body and cause illness. From shamans and witch doctors to herbalists and holy people, they practiced their religions, witchcraft, or alchemyby using amulets, charms, potions, herbs, spells, and invocationsto summon the good that would overcome evil and heal the sick.
Thousands of years ago, it was believed that ailments came about from demons entering the body; in Shakespeares day, bad humors were to blame for poor health. Such notions led to the practice of bloodletting, which was supposed to balance the bodys humors or rid it of any bad spirits that may have entered it. It was such a common practice that even George Washington was repeatedly bled by the doctors who were treating his maladies at the end of his life.
Recent history has seen incredible advances in conventional medicine, but holistic therapies have also made their way into our culture. Several of the ingredients in our new drugs come from rare plants in the rain forests that have been used by native healers for centuries. Countless individuals also look for the answer for wellness in crystals, Reiki, the laying on of hands, acupuncture, or herbal and natural remedies. And then there are past-life regressions, which have been so successful in releasing the traumas we carry over in our morphic resonance (which well discuss later) that make us phobic and sick in this life.
The many healing arts are too numerous to mention, and many of them are, in fact, bogus. People from the United States routinely go to Mexico, Switzerland, and the Philippines for exotic treatments, and the lines to visit Lourdes in France are staggeringall based on the hope of a miraculous cure. Do I believe in miracles? You bet... I see them almost every day. But Im firmly against empty promises and occult gadgetry. I think that we have to approach everything with an open mind, but when you start to deplete your life savings for the pledge of some quack, then youd better run.
The older I get, the more convinced I become that its not just genetics or germs alone that cause health problems. Yes, illness may play a part in our chart (that is, the life plan weve chosen to help us learn and advance our soul), but more times than not, its other people and external situations that are responsible for making us sick. The strain becomes so unbearable that our immune systems natural defenses go down, and then our body becomes an open portal for all manner of ailments and carryovers from this existence or past ones. We cant eliminate stress altogether, nor would we want to, because there are bad kinds and good kinds. Good stress results when we notice that our hard work has paid off; bad stress comes when were on a treadmill of survival, with no light at the end of the proverbial tunnel. If we cant find some comfort or joy in life, we can rest assured that illness will follow.
