I first met Carol Adrienne while contemplating a study guide for The Celestine Prophecy. At the time, I was lukewarm about the idea, wondering whether a guide to the novel would overintellectualize the concepts. Once I got to know Carol, however, my concerns were quickly put to rest. Besides her skill at understanding people and being able to relate to many different life perspectives, she has a knack for bringing every conversation down to earth, and focusing on experience itself. After that discussion, the guide to The Celestine Prophecy did come into being and, chiefly because of Carols writing, became one of the most popular study guides of all time.
As much as anyone, Carol has her finger on the pulse of current evolution. In terms of popular psychology, we humans are integrating the left and right hemispheres of our brains, which only means that we are rediscovering the mystery in our individual lives. Most of us grew up thinking that we lived in a physical world that was ordinary and explained and actually devoid of spiritual mystery. In this world we tended to overly intellectualize goals and to expect only ordinary opportunities to come our way.
Then, as a result of new discoveries and popular books, a new image of the universe around us has begun to take shape. We now expect miracles and small coincidental events to pop up everywhere, opening up magical, destined opportunities that we thought we could only dream about. Whats more, we expect to suddenly crystallize in our minds a greater sense of calling and mission, toward which all this mysterious guidance leads.
What makes this new image so poignant is that we are pulling into consciousness what has always been occurring in the lives of human beings. Those who have made the greatest contributions in history have always done so with a higher sense of destiny and an increased perception of guidance. At some level these people knew that we must face life like detectivesgleaning the meanings, the silver linings, the windows of opportunity, that lie hidden in what occurs around us.
At this point in history, we know that this mysterious life is not just for the geniuses among us; it is waiting there for all of us, no matter where we live, no matter what our education happens to be, and, above all, no matter what kind of childhood weve had. The only thing that matters is that we find a way to open ourselves up to this experience. And that means facing the individual ways we keep ourselves out of it.
Increasing the synchronicity in our lives, for instance, is what we tend to talk about and aim for, but in order to put ourselves in the right place for these destined events to occur, we must get in touch with our intuitions. And as you will see in this book, if we are preoccupying ourselves with negative thoughts about our own abilities, or revenge thoughts about others, or with anything else that serves ourselves, then there is no room for other images and urges to appearthe ones that spontaneously form in the back of our minds. These are our intuitive thoughts and they come to guide us, always suggesting that we do something, go somewhere, or search for a new bit of information. When we risk following them, we move into just the right spot for the synchronicity to unfold and lead us forward.
Getting past our preoccupations can truly bring us to a greater sense of the self we are, the genius we all share, and the knowledge that every event in our lives, whether we have labeled it positive or negative, has uniquely prepared us to be where we are now, poised to pursue a path of service.
Yet again, merely hearing all this at the intellectual leveleven if we believe it completelyis not enough. Our challenge is to integrate this spiritual life into everyday existence, to clear ourselves until we can experience it fully.
With this book, Carol guides us succinctly through this process and that has always been her special gift.
THE PURPOSE OF THIS BOOK
My goal for this book is to inspire you to become aware of and appreciate the fullness of who you are. I know that a book is only a tool, but books have the power to take us many placesin this dimension and beyond. I would like you to think of this book as an introductionfirst, to a host of people whose stories may touch your own life; and second, and most important, to your own self-discovery.
My intention is to create a field of interaction among you, me, and the universal field of intelligence that will begin to create a momentum of energy, catalyzing the recognition of your purpose, if that is as yet unclear to you. In order to do that, I am counting on your own desire to know yourself as part of the current of energy flowing between you and the book. The book is based on the perennial philosophies by which humanity has long navigated the unpredictable shallows and depths of life. My hope is that by bringing you the stories of real people, some inner knowing and recognition of your own path will be touched.
The book is based on my own lived experience both personally and professionally. As you will see in Chapter 1, I have taken the winding road to my present occupation as a teacher, writer, and facilitator of workshops on spiritually and life purpose. Along the way, I have discovered, tested, and taught certain principles and techniques that I feel are eminently practical for helping us to find our place in the world.
It is my intention that this book provide a matrix of information to feed your soulas much as any book can be a stimulus to insights.
We make sense of our world by telling each other stories. Some of the stories in the book will move you. Some will not. Stories connect us to each others experience regardless of time, place, or culture. According to scholar and mythologist Joseph Campbell, the first stories, or ancient myths, were designed to put the mind in accord with the body, and a persons way of life in accord with the dictates of nature.
Stories are understood as a whole, and from them we extract a meaning that is relevant to our own concerns. Each story will, however, work on your psyche in a particular way. What I learn from a story may be similar or completely different from what you learn, depending on our backgrounds, our current situations, our vocabulary, our hopes and fears, and our ability to listenand our inherent life purpose. Maybe at a later time, a story you had not thought much about will suddenly come to mind just when you could use some support.
The right side of the brain, our intuitive and imaginative side, learns best by stories. The left side, rational and deductive in its reasoning, connects easily to techniques, principles, explanations, and step-by-step processes. This book provides both avenues to help you find your place in the world.
HOW TO USE THIS BOOK
Read the book at random or all the way through. It is organized using a mix of stories, principles, suggestions, and personal questions. Hopefully, one of these methods may set off the intuitions that are ready to come forth from your intention to know yourself better.
