Chapter One

W e all need dreams. We all need those moments when we lift our eyes from the long, winding trail and catch sight of the shining, snowcapped peaks on the horizon. Without such a vision of the peaks, without such dreams, life becomes a weary tramp through the lowlands.

As I look back on the recent years of my pastoral ministry, however, I must honestly admit that what has happened is beyond what I had even dreamed. The peaks are higher, brighter, and more glorious than I could ever have imagined. There have been Sundays when my wife and I have been on our way home after a wonderful day of ministry, and I have turned to her and said, As far as a pastor is concerned, it doesnt get any better than this.

What a joywhat an incredible thrillto be a part of what God is doing in the hearts and lives of so many people and to see His work grow faster and further than I could have conceived. Sometimes the excitement and gratitude well up within me to overflowing, and I dont have words to express how I feel.

But at the same time, God keep meand all of usfrom feeling that we have arrived. Im not sure at what age it sets in, but there is a temptation as we get older and have enjoyed some accomplishments and achievements to begin letting up on the accelerator a little. We find ourselves more and more inclined to pop life into cruise control, sit back a little, and watch the scenery go by. We content ourselves with our press clippings and scrap-books and dont go out of our way to exert ourselves or launch into something new.

Some people call it a retirement mind-set, and it can show up in people from their midforties to their midnineties. (If we make it beyond that, maybe we really have earned a little break!) Nevertheless, I have to tell you that I have scoured the Word of God from beginning to end and have not found one place where a believer is given permission to retire. Retire doesnt seem to be part of Gods vocabulary. That realization is both unsettling and challenging to me.

Now, that doesnt necessarily mean that things wont change for us as the years go by. And no one is saying we ought to keep the same routines or do the same things weve always done to bring home the bacon or occupy our time. But it
