The mind loves to hold onto the illusion that it has control over situations and to immerse itself in thought. In reality, your thoughts are just a tiny piece of who you are. You are actually the awareness that witnesses those thoughts. As soon as you begin to observe the patterns of your thoughts and refrain from identifying with or judging them, you can enter a state of joy and peace.
Mindfulness will allow you to immerse yourself in the experiences happening right now. Of course, having an idea of what your future will be like, and learning from your past is important. Yet, pausing to shift your mind to the present gives you power to continue moving forward effectively.
In Mindfulness for Beginners: Declutter your Mind and Overcome Anxiety, Anger, Depression, and Borderline Personality Disorder Becoming Aware of the Present Moment by Practicing Mindfulness Meditations, Elizabeth Broks outlines what mindfulness is and how it can help you experience a state of flow, increased peace of mind and greater happiness. Introduction: Harnessing the Present
    Picture 4

T he main problem that plagues people in our modern world is compulsive thinking. Most have a voice inside their head that is hysterically and constantly leaping from one thought to another without rest. The voice obsesses over any mistakes made, complains, compares, and loves to criticize everyone and everything. Most people are hostages to their own minds whims, without even realizing that the mind is something separate from them, and not their entire identity.

    You are not your Thoughts
    Picture 8

P eople mistakenly identify with the voice in their head, and their mind in general, without ever stopping to realize that their thoughts are not who they are. In fact, your thoughts are just a tiny piece of who you are, and you are th e awareness that witnesses those thoughts. Think about it, when your mind is quiet, do you cease to exist? You are still there, and that you which exists in the silence is the true you. As soon as you begin to observe the patterns of your thoughts and manage to refrain from mistaking them for you or judging them, you can enter into your truer nature, beyond your mind, and enter a state of happiness, joy, and peace.

    Harnessing the Present
    Picture 12

S alvation lies in harnessing the present and living in the now. This becomes easier once you realize that the present is the only real moment, and that the rest of your thoughts are simply illusory.

    • The Downfall of the Human Mind: How often do you notice that you are thinking about your past, regretting what you did, wishing things had happened differently?
    • The Illusion of Control: The mind loves to feel as though it has control over situations, even though most of the time, it doesnt. This obsessive tendency to think over thoughts again and again, reliving the past, and obsessing over what hasnt happened yet, gives us the illusion that we are doing something about our unhappiness.

The present moment is not something specially reserved for certain people, although many successful figures have found and utilized it. Anyone can do this. Its free, and its your birthright as a human being. The moment you start celebrating the now and shift your focus to existing instead of constantly seeking or obsessing, you become free.

Many methods exist for entering the present moment and simply living in the now, and its a highly personal process that you should be creative with. However, one technique, mindfulness can help you shift your focus to the present moment.
