Introduction

Reverend Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. (19291968) is arguably the most renowned leader of the modern civil rights movement. His rearing in the church and extensive educational training at Morehouse College, Crozer Theological Seminary, and Boston University prepared and equipped him to become an influential ministerial activist. Overall, his deep commitment to advancing the social gospel and the kingdom of God has inspired and continues to enthuse Christians in their pursuit of justice.

King emerged as a popular civil rights leader when he accepted the invitation to lead the Montgomery Bus Boycott in December 1955. Numerous black citizens protested segregation on Montgomery buses by boycotting the buses for nearly an entire year. Black churches in Montgomery held mass meetings and lifted the spirits of blacks during the boycott as they carpooled and walked to destinations. The boycott was successful and gave momentum to the civil rights movement. Shortly after the boycott ended, King founded and was elected as the first president of the Southern Christian Leadership Conference. Drawing on Scripture and Christian principles and the teachings of Mahatma Gandhi, the organization orchestrated nonviolent protest demonstrations throughout the United States, especially the South, for more than a decade.

King received wide commendations for his I Have A Dream speech during the March on Washington in 1963. He won the Nobel Peace Prize and was
