The word Europe is from Europa a Phoenician princess of Greek mythology. She was abducted by Zeus and taken to the Greek island of Crete.

Rome was the greatest city in the ancient world.

The Roman Empire was, for almost years, the worlds greatest superpower.

The Roman Empire stretched across Europe.

Rome had immense armies to help conquer other cities and countries.

The rise of the Roman Empire and the spread of Christianity had intense influence on Europes history and development.

The pre- Christian Roman religion viewed the Emperor as a God-like figure.

The decline of the Roman Empire triggered major historic changes for Europe. It moved into the chaos of the Dark Ages, the recovery of the Middle Ages, and then the Renaissance and the Age of Enlightenment.

After the fall of Rome, no single state or government united the people of Europe.

Instead, the Christian faith became the most powerful institution of the medieval period.

Rise of Christianity. The Christian church was at the same time a great landowner and worldly power, a great moral power for good, and a stimulus for study and learning.

The Middle Ages is the birth of idea

The Middle Ages brought increased stability and made possible the developments we know as the Renaissance, or rebirth, of Europe.

European thinkers, writers and artists began to look back and celebrate the art and culture of ancient Greece and Rome, and to extend those arts into their own times.

Europe has been the breeding ground for many wars in history. The First and Second World Wars began in Europe.

The two world wars were largely fought on European land, which ruined the countries involved. The people of Europe lost money, lives and cities.

As a result of these wars, major empires were forever changed, and former countries no longer appear on maps.
