I dedicate this book to my Mom and Dad, Leilani, Riley, Curtis, Halie, new and existing indoor cycling instructors, coordinators, gym owners, indoor cycling enthusiasts, and those of you who have contemplated becoming an instructor.
So many things have changed in the fitness industry since I started in the 90s, I have seen students come and go, and some that I have known since the day I started. What I do know is that many times I have been asked to write a book, or an article, but I have been either too busy, or the timing was off. So many times people would say to me I should write a book. The time is now, and it could not be a better time. I have been in the fitness industry for over 18 years, and I cannot believe how time has flown. I am an artist and Athlete, so I have painted many hand painted clothes, shoes, paintings, and made 8 animation cartoon series (2 daytime Emmys and 1 Primetime Emmy),had many art gallery openings, trained and participated in Triathlon races, and this year I set a goal to write 3 books, and start a project called Surf Soup. I recently published How to Make Cartoons, and get a Job in Animation (a book about how to get into the Animation industry), and I Grow People, A Fitness Trainers secrets about Fitness, Health, and Diets (Fitness Book).
From here I will start my Surf Soup project that has many projects attached it that is for children and everyone, about healing our ocean and related. Proceeds of the funds earned from this book goes towards this project, to heal the ocean and related.
I have had the idea of this book for a few years now. I hope this is a fun read for you, and that you enjoy it as much as I enjoyed writing it, and that you will learn something from my experiences.
Preface/Introduction
This book is whatever you want this book to be. I wanted to write about what I know. I believe that the Fitness Industry has changed and evolved to what the population really wants. I remember the days of step aerobics, and high impact aerobics on cemented floors with carpet over them. I was too young to attend these classes, or to purchase the VHS tapes with Jane Fonda, Richard Simmons, or to watch Jack Lalanne on television, but I saw the infomercials for his juicer. There were so many people in the Fitness industry that had set the way for all of us. I watched and became certified with many training modalities that came and gone, and the latest of the trends like Zumba. I only taught indoor cycling and found it fit me best. I have also been a personal trainer for many years.
I didnt always like indoor cycling. My first indoor cycling class was a disaster, and it was extremely unpleasant. I was a runner, and I had injured my foot, and someone told me about indoor cycling when it was launched, she said I would love it. Shortly after taking that horrible class I researched about taking a better class, and ended up going to the creator of SPINNINGs studio in Culver City, California. Shortly after this I became and instructor, and during my hiatus from Nickelodeon Animation, I went to Johnny Goldbergs (Creator of SPINNING, and the SPINNER bike, with Schwinn) birthday party, in Santa Barbara, California, and I became the Training Coordinator for Madd Dogg Athletics, and SPINNINGs Education Department. I worked and learned many things during this period.
I have been an indoor cycling instructor for over 18 years. I really wanted to write the information in this book to share my experience and to give back to the fitness industry, as well as to help mentor the new up and coming cycling instructors, as it is apparent, it is not a fad that is leaving the fitness industry anytime soon. I wish this book was written for me when I became an instructor as many of my fellow instructors must feel too. This is also written for indoor cycling students who want to know some inside and basic things, that will help them with finding indoor cycling instructors that are educated, and training them correctly.
I would have never been able to complete any of my dreams, designing, making cartoons, writing, and illustrating my books, art galleries, and many projects without the continued support from my Mom and Dad, I LOVE YOU both very much, and I want to acknowledge those who have given me so much support, and knowledge.
I am grateful for Billy R. who is very special to me, and my muse who helped me get going again, and who inspires me to be better ,I Love you, I am forever grateful. I want to Thank Auntie May, Margie B., Connie Bear, Maria C., for being there for me when I needed you most ,I am forever Grateful, I do not know what I would do without you, I Love You.
I want to acknowledge all the continued support from all of my coaches, helping me train when I was going through so much, and understanding when I was injured, and needed time to heal. Thank you for teaching me so much about being a triathlete, swimming, cycling, running, and optimal fitness, Life, but most of all that I can do ANYTHING, if I put my nind to it.
I want to acknowledge Johnny Goldberg who created the most amazing training modalities, SPINNING, and KRANKING. Even though you do not realize what a huge impact your indoor cycling program has made on my life, and the world, I want you to know it is profound. Training on the bike has saved my life, and continues to help me grow, the education, and your friendship, and the wonderful learning, and life experiences with my beautiful sister Vania Ballo, and Federica B., and Orlando Cani. Thank you! Thank you!
